Right now... I think that once I am able to snag a CPU possibly absolute earliest on July 7... I will search for and buy the rest of the components to finally assemble Wimpy. Once I have done that, I will buy the solid state drive, hard disk drive, and RAM, and that will have finished the assembly of Wimpy V2.0.
Below is the sort of "write-up."
Wimpy v2.0
Objective: The objective of this project is to create a desktop computer (and get a monitor) that can
1) Play Doom (2016) in 1080p (1920x1080) resolution whose FPS will not drop below 60fps,
2) Be able to play games that will be made maybe 5 years from now but not significantly have a penalty in FPS or graphic quality (in short: "future-proofing")
Below is a breakdown of parts, their specifications, and how I plan to acquire them. A couple of items have been "upgraded" from my original plan. By acquiring second-hand parts, I could get higher-spec ones while potentially spending the same amount of as I have if I chose to buy brand new parts but using the original specifications I had in mind.
- CPU: Ryzen 5 2600
Acquisition Plan: Second-hand purchase from the market
AMD is expected to release a new series of CPUs on July 7. I am not going to buy the new series of CPUs. But once they are released, I am expecting people to sell their old CPUs. From there I will be watching out for any good deals.
- GPU: GTX 1070
Acquisition Plan: Second-hand purchase from the market
I have also potentially found cheap GTX 1070's for about close to the price I was willing to pay for the cheapest first-hand GTX 1060 6GB I originally found. Although there is a big risk that they have been sold by this point.
If I haven't purchased the GPU, I can temporarily stick with the GTX 770 that will come with Roel's offer. I think I will be able to play Fallout 4 at 1080p 60FPS using high settings. And once I get the GTX 1070, I will be selling the GTX 770.
- RAM: 16GB DDR4 3000mhz
Acquisition Plan: Most likely buy first-hand
Originally I had found both discounted RAM and a discounted CPU, and finding both of them in the same hour drove me crazy because I though it would be the start of my assembly. However the seller of the RAM is not responding, so I am guessing that the person was already able to sell it. Moreover, looking for high-speed second-hand RAM seems to be extremely difficult.
I chose a higher speed RAM since Roel said that Ryzens are more sensitive to RAM speed, as compared to Intel CPUs. Apparently the first-hand ones I saw were only slightly cheaper, so I am determined that I am willing to buy brand new ones. Also, Roel believes that 8GB of RAM is sufficient if I do not intend to stream my gaming. I trust his judgment, but I think I got blinded by potential power... from the extra RAM. Well, not really, but I guess it's part of "future proofing."
- Storage: A 240GB SSD and a 2TB HDD
Acquisition Plan: Buy first-hand
There are many risks to buying second-hand products such as its failure to function, either immediately or after a very short span of time. I think data is something I am not willing to risk, so I am targeting to buy them first-hand. Plus apparently brand new 240GB SSDs are not too expensive.
I chose 240GB SSDs because I plan to install games in the SSD. I think it will be sufficient because I don't have too many games, plus I plan to manage my memory usage as much as possible, i.e. backing up installations from the SSD to the HDD, and uninstalling stuff when already done or not in use. As for the 2TB HDD, I honestly don't think I'm going to use a lot of memory, since I am ok so far with a 750TB HDD with Wimpy and 1.5TB of external hard drive memory and still so much free space left. If I get this drive combo, I basically increase my combined internal capacity three times. But I guess this is also for some sort of "future proofing" as well.
- Mother Board: Aorus B450
Acquisition Plan: Included in Roel's package
The only thing I don't like about the motherboard is that it is a standard ATX-sized motherboard, and I wanted a smaller computer. But that is mostly aesthetic, and I think the motherboard I am getting is a very good-spec hardware at a good price. I can overclock (or underclock) my CPU with this motherboard, so that gives me room for processor "management".
- Power Supply: XFX 850w Power Supply (Bronze-rated)
Acquisition Plan: Included in Roel's package
The power supply is waaay above the power I needed once the computer has been assembled, which I think would be just at 550W or 600W maximum. So this will also be a good part of Roel's deal.
Also, I am excited to share Wimpy 2.0 to my brothers once it is up. When Limit got his latest and current computer (which is, by the way, lower in spec when compared to Wimpy v1.2's current setup), I remember spending an excessive amount of time playing Fallout 3. So I will tell them that if they are interested in playing high-spec games, they are free to install and play it in Wimpy v2.0. I also just confirmed that Steam users can share their game library with other users who login in the same computer (or even in other computers?), so I can share my Steam Library with my brothers. Not that I own a lot of games.
Limit may not benefit from this offer since he's already married and moved out. (Oh by the way, that happened!) Dominic says he's not interested in playing triple A games and it's probably why he did not invest in gaming hardware, but he is a fan of the classic Doom so he may be interested in playing the new Doom.
That's it for my Wimpy update. I did not realize that time flew by so fast, and July 7 is so near already.
