I will discuss the "Agno Economy."
"Agno" is a short stretch of road just outside the north portion of the school. It has several stalls selling various commodities, ranging from cigarettes to candy to minimal school supplues to packed food (junk food) and meals (rice meals in styrofoam containers). It is well known as a smoker's area and a place to buy cheap food. There are no chairs and tables (there were benches before) - just stalls. I figure it is swarmed by Engineering and Computer Science students because of proximity. Anyway.
The owners of the stalls are part of the black market, so their presence there as food sellers isn't exactly legal.
The stall owners have faced several "bad encounters" (is lacking terms) in the recent past. Around 4 (?) months ago, police raided the stall owners to get rid of them. A message that was spread around Y!M said that it was (the workers in?) EGI who informed (?) the police about it. EGI is a conduminium building, and the ground floor has restaurants and stores. They were "facing" competition and decided to let legal matters fight for them. The stall owners came back the next (school?) day.
Recently, there has been construction in the lot beside Agno. One day when I bought food there, a stall owner asked me to sign for a petition that the stall owners stay therer to continue their business there. Apparently the owner of the site under construction also want the stalls gone.
This week when I bought food, I was (still) looking for anyone that sold C2. Stalls sell them before but now I could not find a single stall that sells them. I had to ask the stall owner "How come you don't sell C2 anymore?" He said "We would if we wanted to, but we can't." He then explains that the owner of the site is affiliated to Coke, and they're only selling Coke products. It must explain why I only see Coke, Coke Zero, Nestea, and two other drinks that I fail to identify.
I figure that the stall owners and the owner of the site had an agreement so they could keep their businesses. Not everyone seems happy about it - there were at least two stalls that I never saw again. I have no grounds for this assumption, but I'm thinking the stall owners are paying rent.
The site under construction looks like a small food court - I see small compartments and equipment for storing and displaynig food.
The road has been fixed and, as mentioned above, the benches, I think, are now missing. Smokers normally sit there. I'll have to take a closer look again.
So if prices would increase and if there are no more benches for smokers to use, then I believe that Agno has disappeared.
