The job is going well. For those of you who read Simon's LJ, you already know that I was asked to join Wyevale as a permanent employee. I thought I would give you all the details on how things have happened and are going now.
I started three weeks ago as a temporary employee. They are moving their business office from Hereford (close to Wales) to Slough (just west of london and south from Heathrow). Since the employees in Hereford, who are being made redundant, refused to come to Slough to train the new staff, we all had to travel to Hereford. Originally, it was suppose to be for two weeks, and the cash department was to start up in Slough as of the 1st of February. They soon realized that we had way too much to learn and we were still under-staffed, so the move date was extended to the 11th of February, and we are still having to travel to Hereford each week.
I originally started processing vouchers for the 120 stores in the UK. After the first day, I had completed more than half of those stores, and the second day, I was training one of the new staff members on how to process them. The third day, I learned how to do the bank recs for the stores, which I was doing on my own after a couple of hours of training. My manager realized that I learned quickly and knew what I was doing so she moved me to handling the cash books for two of the divisions, including doing the month-end balancing, and journal processing. By that Friday, she asked me if I was interested in permanent work or preferred working temporary positions. I told her that I was just working temporary, because it was the easiest way for me to get work in the UK since I am a foreigner over here, and yes, I would be interested in permanent work.
The following Tuesday, she came to me and told me the Finance Manager wanted to know if I would consider joining the company as a permanent employee. I, of course, said "yes", and she told me that she would let the Finance Manager know and that he would probably talk to me about it Thursday or Friday when he arrived in Hereford. That Friday, he met with me, asked me how much I was asking for. I told him, and he says "I think we can beat that", tells me what he is offering me (£2K per year more than what I was asking for) and told me that I would be considered a senior, that considering me a junior would be an insult. *grins proudly* I officially start as a permanent employee on Monday (4th of February). We have one more week in Hereford, then I will back home for good. The company has been paying all our expenses in Hereford, including meals, hotel and travel. I am really enjoying the work, and for the most part, I am working with a great group of people.
I did run into one problem with one person, but it is not that big of a deal. They have this woman who is working as a interum manager in Management Information. I had to spend about an hour in that department on Wednesday, to get some coding on some items that I needed to post. This woman was wearing Tommy Girl perfume, and I think she took a bath in it. Unfortunately, I am allergic to it, so by the time I got back down to my desk, my allergies were on a major uproar, and I have been fighting it since then.
That is the update from work. Got to chat to my daughter today. I hadn't heard from her in about a month. She is back in school, she and her hubby are looking for a house, and she is stressing because her father (my ex) is in jail for being stupid. My sister left for a cruise on Disney cruiselines today, so I know she will be enjoying it, especially since St. Louis got 7-8 inches of snow the other day.
Take care everyone.
