How to Succeed in Meetups Without Really Trying
Had a great weekend visit with fandom friends, both old (
rhrsoulmates,
mrs_bombadillunalovepotter,
penny_sieve,
dome36) and new (
redhotwitch,
hpiknut). Had maybe the best burger of my life at Junior's before heading to the Hirschfeld for my second (and everyone else's first) viewing of H2SIB. As I was getting a ticket last minute, I ended up doing standing room, which wasn't bad at all.
Differences between this performance and first night of previews - Dan much more confident and not talking quite so fast; more dancing injected into the party scene in Act 1; the pirate number is still there, but it's a little shorter, I think; I didn't like Tammy Blanchard's performance as much here as in previews (less breathy and sensual now, more hysterical); Dan jumps on the couch a bit longer now, which gets an even bigger laugh, but I thought it was a smidge overkill. Can't wait for the cast album!
After the show Saturday, Dan and John Larroquette came out and auctioned off Dan's bowtie (and an autograph/photo/hug) for Broadway Cares. Lots of great one-liners and interacting with the audience. A grandstanding gentleman made a couple of dramatic bids and seemed to drop out after being outbid both times.
rhrsoulmates came thisclose to winning, but the grandstanding gentleman made one last stupendous bid and won the prize for his daughter.
Sunday, we went to the HP Exhibition. I had already been the week before with
kerryblaze but it was great to go again and get a closer look at things I skimmed over the first time. Before our group went through, they sorted a few of us, including an adorable baby who was sorted into Slytherin. After HP-ing, we took a group picture in front of the Hirschfeld (CHIPMUNK RAAAAH!), then went to lunch and hung out a bit, eventually segregating into People Who Knew DH2 Spoilers And Wanted To Vent About Them and People Who Were Unspoiled And/Or Preferred To Stay In A Happy HP Place. Several of our party went back to the Hirschfeld to try their luck at the stage door as the Sunday matinee of H2SIB let out (which seems to have turned out quite well for them indeed), but I opted out and after bidding farewell to (and talking a little more HP movie talk with)
mrs_bombadil at the subway station, I headed back home.
Movies, Movies, Movies
Saw a couple of movies this weekend. Hanna was not as good as I'd hoped. It was fairly entertaining, and Saorsie Ronan was impeccable as usual, but there were too many things left unanswered. Not just mysteries, but basic character motivation things. I also saw Your Highness, which was pretty much exactly what I was expecting - a hilarious send-up of the old sword-and-sorcery movies of the 1980s. The script is kind of a mess, but when it works it really works. In other movie news, last weekend I saw Source Code, which was quite good up until the ending, and Rubber, which is as wonderfully absurd as you'd imagine a movie about a serial killer tire named Robert would be. Looking forward to the new Scream this Friday (I refuse to call it "SCRE4M", not only because it's stupid, but because I tend to pronounce it "scre-four-m"). I may be watching the original trilogy in preparation.
More Theater
I found out that the Book of Mormon musical (by the South Park guys and the guy who did the music for Avenue Q) is doing a lottery, and I plan to try my luck tomorrow. I have heard literally nothing but raves about this musical, and I'm anxious to see if it delivers. I can't believe there are no video clips or song clips or anything online yet. Just four still pictures that every news outlet is forced to use. I'm anxious to see this. It's been called "an atheist's love letter to religion", which is an intriguing description to say the least.
Grilled Cheese of the Gods
In totally trivial news, I found a recipe for the World's Greatest Grilled Cheese Sandwich. I made one for lunch today, and it's INCREDIBLE. Here's the video showing how to make it.
alphabet26, did you make it yet? How was yours?
