To be honest, this is a fairly lackluster month, in my opinion, especially for summer. There are only a few movies that I'm actually excited about, and that's not great odds for a season that's supposed to be laden with blockbusters.
But still, there is Toy Story 3. Ah, Pixar.
JUNE 4
Killers - It's not that I don't think Katherine Heigl is a good actor. It's just that I wish she would stop playing women who are characterized by their fear of being single. Seriously, wasn't 27 Dresses bad enough?
Get Him to the Greek - Russell Brand's obnoxious rock star character was my favorite thing about Forgetting Sarah Marshall (along with the Dracula puppet opera), but I'm not sure I can watch an entire movie that revolves around him. Even if it has Tom Felton in it.
Marmaduke - Ugh, no way. Uh-uh. You know what's sad, though? It will probably be the top film of the weekend. Remember G-Force and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel? It's just going to happen, and we'll have to deal with it when it does.
Ondine - (limited) Neil Jordan spins an Irish fairy tale with Colin Farrell in a romantic role. Color me interested.
My Pick of the Weekend:
Splice - The creature in this movie reminds me of vampire-baby Renesmee, only interesting. This has gotten a lot of attention at the geek sites, and it looks all kinds of creepy and awesome. Plus, it has Adrien Brody in it, which makes it extra awesome.
JUNE 11
The Karate Kid - I've heard this is actually quite good. I just wish they had chosen a different title for this film, as it's actually about kid learning kung fu, instead of lazily naming it for the movie it's based on. Also, I wish it had an actual kid in it, instead of it being a vehicle for Will Smith's son.
Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work - (limited) Have heard great things about this, and I'd kind of love to see it. I miss how Rivers used to rib the stars on the red carpet, and I was sad that she kind of got away from that persona, forcing Kathy Griffin to take her place. But she seems to be getting her mojo back recently.
My Pick of the Weekend:
The A-Team - Having been a huge fan of the television series growing up, I'm pretty pumped for this. It may not make a lot of money, because I'm pretty sure no one under the age of 30 even knows what the A-Team is, but I'll be there with bells on. And possibly a denim jacket with cute button pins.
JUNE 18
Jonah Hex - I've heard some pretty bad reactions to this, and the trailer does not impress me at all. Sadly, I might end up seeing this purely because of Michael Fassbender.
I Am Love - (limited) This is one I'll probably end up seeing on DVD, but I'm fascinated by just about anything Tilda Swinton does.
Cyrus - (limited) One of the darlings of Sundance, I'm interested to see John C. Reilly and Jonah Hill in a semi-serious movie.
My Pick of the Weekend:
Toy Story 3 - One of the only about three films this entire summer that I am actually pee-my-pants excited about. We've seen lots of the first act of this film, and a little of the second act, but not even the college kids who got to see most of this movie have seen the third act, which supposedly packs a huge emotional wallop. I would expect no less from Pixar, who miraculously made that first sequel to Toy Story an unexpected weeper. Could this movie be strong enough to put a dent in the sparkly movie coming out two weeks later?
JUNE 25
Grown Ups - Yes, SNL alums and Kevin James, we know you're children in men's bodies. You don't need to make a whole movie to remind us.
Knight and Day - Manic Tom Cruise is just not interesting to me. Be more vulnerable, dude.
JUNE 30
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - I might actually go see this. At a $6 matinee. Far, FAR from the opening weekend. It actually looks like it could be the least horrible movie so far. It cracks me up to see the Twihards whine about how there's too much stuff that's not in the books and not enough Bella and Edward mooning at each other. "Can't you just give us our non-sexual porn?!!"
