RomComs - "Walter, you're wonderful, in a loathsome sort of way."

Oct 13, 2007 23:29

I first saw this movie in the midst of a million other movies at a film festival, so I really needed to rewatch at least a bit of this, so that I could refresh my memory on how it went. It's available on YouTube, so I didn't even have to hunt for it. And for at least the first 20 minutes, I was trying to think of another movie to do today. Because I didn't like it, couldn't remember why I loved it before, and could not stand Cary Grant's character.

His Girl Friday

Clearly I changed my mind. :P Walter still rubs me the wrong way, and he's not really a sympathetic character at all. But he's not really the focus of this movie; Hildy is. An oft-used theme of romances (whether comedies or not) is that of a shared language. The hero and heroine speak a language that no one else understands, and no matter how in love they may think they are with someone else, if that someone else doesn't speak the language, it's not going to work out. I'm sure Bruce is a lovely guy, but he doesn't get who Hildy is. Likewise, there's nothing wrong with Hildy wanting a normal life, but she's changing who she is in order to have it.

Memorable Moments in Dialogue:
Walter: Sorta wish you hadn't done that, Hildy.
Hildy: Done what?
Walter: Divorced me. Makes a fella lose all faith in himself. Gives him a... almost gives him a feeling he wasn't wanted.
Hildy: Oh, now look, junior... that's what divorces are FOR!
