Post-weekend Update (music, movies, work, libraries, West Wing, and a meme)

I've been way negligent about online matters lately. Not sure why - I've been on as much as usual, I think. But I haven't been consumed by the desire to post or comment nearly as much lately. I do have about half a dozen movies whose reviews are trapped in draft form somewhere in a locked post, but it's seeming too late to talk about them.

* I had a busy weekend - at least the first part of it. It actually started on Thursday when I left work, went straight to a restaurant where I could watch the Belmont basketball team play their only game in the NCAA tournament. From there I went to a concert that featured two wonderful pieces by Mozart and Michael Haydn, respectively. And from there I went straight to the theater to catch the 10pm screening of V For Vendetta.

I still love that movie. It has its flaws, but it's such a feast of words and ideas that I have trouble holding things like the disturbing and "pastede on" romance against it.

* Friday was another busy day. Thankfully, I didn't have to go in to work early, but this was the second of four Friday evenings in a row (sort of - there's one week off in there) that I have to help host child care. My head is swimming with reservations and payments and who's making what Friday up for last month and ... gah. I'll be glad when this stuff is over. Then we'll move into the "calm" summer season. :P

* Our local libraries have started a new thing where they're trying to emphasize self-checkout. In addition to turning all of the checkout monitors toward the patrons and having only one person behind the desk at any given time, they've made it so that people can check out their own hold items. This is very convenient, of course, but it has a couple of flaws that I think "the powers that be" have overlooked. Say, for example, that I requested a book on Kama Sutra (this is just an example, you pervs on my flist). This book is taken off the shelf (or out of the return bin, as the case may be) and put onto the now public-access hold shelf under my name. If someone wanted to, they could take a look at what I have on hold and find the Kama Sutra book there. Surely this consitutes a potential invasion of privacy.

Also, I'd say most of the materials that people put on hold are very popular, high-demand items (except for people like me who frequently use the library as their own personal shopper). To take another example, let's say I were to put a hold on the next, yet-to-be-released, volume 7 of the Harry Potter series next summer (*crosses fingers*). Couldn't someone further down the hold list browse the shelf and take the book for themselves? Perhaps the computer won't let someone check out a book if someone else has reserved it, but I have to wonder.

* Speaking of the library, I seem to have developed a bit of a complex about it, similar to the mealtime phenomenon often referred to (in my neck of the woods, anyway) as "one's eyes being bigger than one's stomach." I tend to check out a lot more than I can consume in the given checkout period. Like I'm going to die tomorrow and this is my last chance to check anything out EVAR.

* West Wing was good last night, despite the lack of Josh/Donna. *SPOILERS* I'm so glad they've made Vinick a decent guy. He does the right thing, and wants Santos to do the right thing. I was ready to be steaming mad if they turned the "briefcase" scenario into a big sex scandal (hello, shark-jumping!), but I'm pleased with how it turned out. Except that Santos should have acknowledged that Vinick was being a good guy. Also, I *LOVED* Bruno telling that evil Vinick campaign woman that things were different in the Republican party before "you people" took over. Ohhhh, SNAP! *END OF SPOILERS*

* And, speaking of WW and J/D, I can't stop staring at my icon. *eyes glaze over*

* And, because without memes my life would be a blank ...

You Belong in Rome

You're a big city girl with a small town heart
Which is why you're attracted to the romance of Rome
Strolling down picture perfect streets, cappuccino in hand
And gorgeous Italian men - could life get any better?
What City Do You Belong In?
