Thanks for posting this here. While I certainly think Martha's made the right decision for her own health in cancelling for 2007, I am concerned that it might be scheduled for 2008, as Con.Txt is planned then. In fact, it was postponed for 2007 so as not to compete with Connexions this year. Since they graciously deferred to Martha for this year, I would hope she might do the same, and postpone to a later date, not 2008, as there is already an east coast con at that general time of year.
Hey, Shay. I agree with you, Martha made the right decision postponing Connexions until 2008. Her health (and life) is more important than a convention.
As for Connexions and Con.txt being in the same year. Well, Connexions has always been an annual convention and had she not had to cancel for health reasons, Connexions would still be held next year.
Well, no, actually of late it's not annual. She skipped 2006, remember? And there was talk that 2007 might be the last one. I remember that from the 2005 con.
In any case, since I'm not able to attend both, nor are many of my friends, I'll have to choose one...and I've already committed to Con.Txt in 2008. It's a shame.
Connexions and Con.txt conflict?m_lashaJanuary 20 2007, 15:35:47 UTC
Martha skipped 2006 to take a break after Jan died and the concom needed a break. I know she always intended to come back and do another Connexions. It's just this year got pushed back because of the heart attack - things happen, it was not intentional.
And, I look at the possible conflict of Connexions and Con.txt this way: Brooklinegirl announced her convention, muskratjamboree, well after it was known that Connexions was being held the same weekend.
Martha wasn't upset that Broookelinegirl was having a convention in the same year, let alone the same weekend as her con. These things happen. Fans decided to either attend Brooke's con or go to Connexions. (And remember Brooke made her con announcement before Martha canceled Connexions).
Basically, fans made a choice between the conventions and that's what will happen with Con.txt and Connexions if they are both held in 2008. And I think that March and June are still far enough apart that most fans could still attend both

Ican only speak for myself, though my flist is chock full of similar sentiments: I decided to go to Boston because nothing had been mentioned about Connexions less than three months before the intended date, and I doubted it would actually occur even before it was cancelled. (And of course there was the lovely Bus Station Hotel to consider, but that's moot.)
People will go where they will, I suppose. The Media* West/Con.txt proximity is unfortunate, but Media*West, though slash friendly, is not a slash con, and it's enormous. There's less there, not more, for me to enjoy. It's also in the Mid west, and not all of us on the east coast can attend.
Meanwhile, I'm sorry you missed out on attending Muskrat Jamboree, which is a tiny gathering, and which sold out almost immediately. It would have been nice to see you there, along with others who planned to attend Connexions.

As for the hotel, it has been remodeled, which is nice, but I understand why people don't like the location. However as a former flight attendant I have stayed in a lot of motels/hotels and the Connexions one is not even remotely bad. It is a palace compared to the crack-whore, flea-infested, truck stop one I once stayed at in St. Louis. Next time I see you I will tell you the sordid story - and I have pictures! *g

I'm on the concomm and to my knowledge there was never any discussion about 2007 being the last Connexions. Nor have I ever heard Martha say that. Where did you hear that?
Also, many people attend both Shore Leave and FarPoint and they are held five months apart so there is no reason why two cons cannot be held in the same year.
Martha said something about it at the Banquet show. But it's moot -- people change their minds. Meanwhile, yes, of course. People do attend several cons a year. I may be one of those who can't.
