There are some writing devices, like nineteen-year gaps, that bother me. Particularly shows/novels that look somewhat interesting until they reveal The Reporter.
The Reporter is almost always a woman with amped up sex appeal generally used to spark love interest in the main character; for example, Lois Lane and unknown character in the Dresden files. (Thankfully Cloe from Smallville has escaped the stereotype of being a dumb, damsel in distress reporter and is instead an intelligent and quick-witted individual.)
One would think people like Joss Whedon have shown the world women can be more than mere damsels stuck in stereotypes, but can actually venture further than that and succeed. I guess that's why he hates being asked why he writes characters about strong women.
