So because I don't have a lease-car anymore at the very least until I get a new job , I signed up with Cambio, a car-sharing service. So far I am very happy about the service.

The idea is quite simple. You pay a 35 euro entrance fee into the program and you choose between 3 packages. There's the Start, Bonus and Comfort packages. The monthly fees ( Read more... )

I like the system a lot, and for things like job interviews or the occasional daytrip it sounds like a perfect system for people who don't want to make the (big) investment that a car is, but last time I heard (which is arguably a long time ago), doing things like "a weekend in the ardennes", 'going to conception" was pretty expensive with Cambio (unless you manage to put 4 people in the car maybe). That still true?

Yeah of course it's best to fill the car up with people for the longer trips. For Conception it'll cost us about 320 euro's (at 1020 km). But considering that going there by train or plane would have cost between 160 and 180 per person, it's still a much cheaper alternative, and renting a car for the duration would have cost about 250 euro's at most rental places, and that's without gas included. But yes, if you're going on your own, public transport is still a cheaper option, already for the shorter trips, but even more so on the longer ones. The biggest cost is still the kilometers.

So yes, it's definitely advisable to stuff 4 people in your car. With 3 it's often cheaper as well, and with 2 you'll often pay around the same as with public transport, but with added convenience of not having to make transfers and being able to leave when you need to instead of waiting and it being about twice as fast in general.
