IC Information
Name: Michael Harding
Canon: The Stepfather, 2009 terrible B-movie remake
Timeline: During his coma. So basically he wakes up here.
Canon Resource Link: The wiki of the plot is here, but since it’s a bit fuzzy on the details and the climax of the movie is literally Michael’s last memory, I’ll go into a bit more detail here. It’s the last thing he knows happened, and therefore a big part of who he is when he wakes up.
Michael already suspects that his shady new stepfather David is, in fact, a mass murderer. On the night in question, Michael breaks into the basement, David’s private area of the house, to take a look at what’s in the permanently-locked cabinets down there. Kelly acts as really terrible B-movie lookout. It is the same night David decides to kill the whole family.
Kelly sees the lights go on upstairs, but in a really obvious plot device Michael’s phone drops and shatters, preventing her from warning him. She walks through the front garden to tell Michael to get out just as Michael finds his own father’s dead body in the freezer.
Outside, David finds Kelly and punches her out, trapping Michael inside where he can’t save her. Michael eventually breaks down the basement door to the house with a crowbar to escape, hearing his mother’s screams through the wall, and finds Kelly knocked out in the kitchen. He rouses her, then together they run upstairs to find Michael’s mother, who has stabbed David in the neck with a shattered mirror. David rallies, however, and a case begins that leads them all to the attic, where there is a brief but highly unlikely swordfight with a kitchen knife and a crowbar, convenient termite damage in the floor and a circular saw that flies through the air and miraculously does no harm to anybody.
Michael tackles David, sending them both flying out the wall of the attic and onto the lip of the second floor roof. Finally, Michael manages to push David off the roof and out of sight. However, this is a B-movie. And we all know in B-movies, it is never this easy.
Michael looks over the edge, and David reaches up and grabs him, sending them both falling two storeys to the ground. Michael lands headfirst; that’s the last he can remember.

Michael is also a giant knot of daddy issues. His mother Susan says in the earlier half of the movie that she let her first marriage to Michael’s father Jay go on too long; up until that divorce, it’s implied that the parents were head to head all the time, each as spiteful and stubborn as the other. In many ways, he’s had to become an adult far too early in life because of his parents’ relationship, and it’s hardened him, and probably is the deepest reason behind the rebel-without-a-cause persona that sent him to military school. (It’s never said what it was he did that got him sent there, merely that he had a terrible temper, hung out with the wrong crowd and somehow got himself banned from the swim club at his old high school, but since those issues seemed to have calmed down even by the beginning of the movie, I won’t go deeply into them except to say that Michael’s fuse is very short when he’s stressed, and he can get annoyed extremely easily. When he does get annoyed, he’s not exactly polite about it, either, but if he likes someone, that impoliteness translates to an oddly snarky sense of humour.)
It’s implied, too, that at one point Michael was very close with his dad, and therefore his father’s leaving the family was a huge betrayal of Michael’s trust in him. From then on, Michael never wanted to speak to the man ever again - it’s what made him mistrustful of anything resembling a father figure, as he was with David at the beginning of the movie. Now that Michael has survived David’s attack, this mistrust will have grown exponentially, and Michael’s anger at people (or kinds of people) he feels have betrayed or slighted him is not the sort that fades over time; he holds onto a grudge a long, long time, perhaps years, perhaps never letting it go unless the person he holds the grudge against makes an effort to remedy the situation.
That said, he’s not entirely averse to giving people chances. He was open to letting his father back into his life by the end of the movie, but it was too late - his father’s death just at the time Michael was ready to try the whole having-a-father thing again will have made him even that much more guarded. He’s not as likely to give people chances now he’s been through his ordeal, but he hasn't completely ruled it out of his lifestyle, either.
Despite having once been what might be termed a hooligan, Michael is anything but a flake. He has been dating his girlfriend Kelly for several years now, and while they fight as much as any other couple, he’s never cheated and never would dare to. That said, should someone finally convince him while he’s here that he won’t see Kelly ever again, and then should another someone steal his heart, he can be very jealous, indeed.

He’s also a very sharp kid, and keeps his head when backed into a corner. He’s a good improviser with whatever’s handy, and can very well ‘make do’.
Also, apparently he can wield a crowbar as a weapon. Because why not.
What items will they be bringing with them to Discedo? Since he will have been pulled out of a coma in canon, he could appear wearing only a hospital gown and with an oxygen tube hooked up in his nose, but I would prefer if it’s possible for him to come with nothing at all save some nondescript clothes, if it can be done?
Posting Samples
Third-Person Sample: While Michael slept, he dreamed.
He dreamed of falling. Falling off the roof, David beside him, and he knew what was coming but couldn’t stop it - he could only watch as he fell slow-motion through air like molasses towards the pavement. A silent yell made its way to his throat, but when he opened his mouth to let it out, he heard no sound.
On the lab table, Michael’s fingers twitched.
He dreamed of watching his mother and girlfriend crashing and screaming through the floor with an operating circular saw in hand, how that moment of watching them disappear was the most frightening moment of his life, far and away beyond David standing over him and about to finish him off. It was definitely the worst moment of the worst night of his life. That time he did hear himself scream, but it was all his could do, release this hoarse cry of Kelly’s name as she plummeted out of sight.
He moaned quietly in his sleep as the scene replayed, over and over. The only change was the intermittent flash of memory of discovering his father’s dead body in the freezer, perfectly wrapped in plastic, eyes still wide.
His body was beginning to fight the sleep, but he hadn’t got control of his limbs back from the coma yet; there were sounds, though, and the drawing together of eyebrows, and finger twitches like he was looking for a hand to hold.
Michael’s dream changed. Now it was just David, looming in the dark, a bloodied kitchen knife in hand. In fact, now Michael looked, David was covered in blood - too much blood for any one person to survive losing. Some of it stuck between the man’s teeth when he smiled.
Michael’s eyes flew open in the lab room, the glare from the light he was so unused to from nearly a month of unconsciousness blinding him almost instantly, so that he was only left with an impression of the room he was lying in. It was a room he did not recognize.
Slowly, alarm bells starting going off in his brain.
Where was he?
First-Person Sample: [ The feed cuts to a very close shot of a teen boy as he fidgets with the device on his wrist, figuring the message-creating business out. He’s been examining what messages he could find on the thing for a few minutes, so he might as well take a crack at it. It’s not hard, but he’s peering at it closely until it works, then pulling it out to talk at it properly. ]
Okay. [ The camera tilts as he adjusts the device on his wrist. ] Kelly? Mom? [ He’s wasting no time looking for the people he cares about, clearly agitated and worried, but his voice is hushed like he doesn’t want someone to hear. Not that it would help if David had access to this network. ] Sean, Beth… if any one of you can hear this, anyone at all, you leave me a message here, okay? Leave me a message and I’ll come find you.
[ He looks around like he’s expecting a crazy murderer to jump out from behind a corner any minute now. Technically, he is. ] If you know anything at all about what’s going on, that’d be reaaaally useful bonus information right now, too, but mostly I just want to know that you’re okay, where you are, a-and where David is. The rest we can address later. [ There’s an unevenness to his voice before he mentions David. Michael sighs, sharply and heavily. ] Call me.

It's father figures or male figures of authority he has the most trouble with, especially if they are trying to/are set to be authority figures in his life. It's not that he expects to see murderers around every corner, far from it, but upon meeting someone like that his mistrust would be obvious. They'd get the benefit of the doubt upon first meeting, but should he not like even one shade of their behaviour, those people get no second chances. Once someone fails this unofficial test, too, it would take a very, very long time for that person to redeem themselves in Michael's eyes. He has always been a very independent and self-sufficient boy - in many ways, even aside from his learned mistrust of authority figures, he doesn't feel he needs one to get on with his life.
I hope that helps!
