So I think I've pretty much got my list of texts for my Female Protagonists of Colors in Speculative Fiction course.
Required Texts:
James Alan Gardener - Expendable
Angelica Gorodischer - Kalpa Imperial
SM Stirling - Island in the Sea of Time
Octavia Butler - Wild Seed
Hiromi Goto - The Kappa Child
Leslie Marmon Silko - Almanac of the Dead
Larissa Lai - Salt Fish Girl
Eva Swan - The Bone Whistle
Nalo Hopkinson - Midnight Robber
Daina Chaviano - The Island of Eternal Love
Samuel R. Delany - Neveryona
Borden's "Born In Flames" (film)
Miyazaki's "Nausicca of the Valley of the Winds" (graphic novel)
Additional Texts:
David Heath Justice - Kynship
Miller's Give Me Liberty (graphic novel)
Children of Men (film)
Justine Larbalestier - Liar
Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu - The Shadow Speaker
F.M. Busby - Zelde M'tana
My main concern in deciding which were required and which additional had a lot to do with my own reading habits. I haven't read (or it's been long enough that I've forgotten a lot) the works that are required. I intend to go through all the texts during winter break. The additional texts are works I've already read/watched or alternatively I felt they covered similar ground to one of the required texts.
If anyone has any concerns over the books I've listed feel free to let me know but for now this is my list of texts.
