Politician sacked over DR Congo 'ghost minister' scandal KINSHASA (AFP) - The head of one of Democratic Republic of Congo's ruling parties was fired after it turned out the man he helped nominate as the country's trade minister did not exist, his party said Monday.
Government coalition party the Union of Congolese Nationalists and Federalists, or Unafec, decided to fire its leader Honorius Kisimba Ngoy for misleading "the president of the Republic and the prime minister by proposing a fictitious person ... for the position of minister of external trade."
In a statement issued after a party meeting on Saturday, Unafec condemned Kisimba's "irresponsible and unacceptable behaviour" in listing the name of Andre Kasongo Ilunga along with his own as the party's candidates to the trade minister position.
Prime Minister Antoine Gizenga picked Ilunga for the post on February 5, but he never turned up.
Kisimba later informed Gizenga that Ilunga had resigned, but the prime minister refused to accept his resignation until it is given in person. He announced at the end of February that he had launched a search for the missing government member.
Unafec, which at the weekend's meeting appointed Gabriel Kyunga wa Kumwanza as its new president and Pierre-Renard M'Pelekwa as its vice president, said it would approach Gizenga "in order to regain possession of the ministerial position that rightfully belongs to Unafec."
Kisimba, who was unavailable for comment, did not attend the Unafec meeting.
