“Benji, open the door!”
Aside from that phenomenal opening scene, MIRN proves to be the pinnacle of all MI movies.
*Can't believe it's almost one year since I last wrote an entry here.*
Last Saturday, I watched Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (MIRN) at Gandaria City XXI IMAX. It was the first time ever I watched movie at midnight. The movie started at 23.45. The mall is already closed, but the cinema was crowded. When I went in to the IMAX theater, the seats are almost all full even until the front row. Unbelievable. I had no idea Tom Cruise could create this kind of hype.
Watching movie at midnight is tiring, especially when you didn't have time to rest during mid-day, but the movie really made up for it. For 2 hours, my eyes are glued into the screen. It was so entertaining and intense, non-stop action from start to end. Let me tell you, this is probably the best MI movie so far. The execution is so sleek and neat, just like James Bond movies. Tom Cruise is no Daniel Craig, but he sure has improved a lot since the last MI movie (Ghost Protocol, 2011). I was blown away.
I also like the leading female role, Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson). Girl sure knows how to fight. I am quite satisfied that she is portrayed more like a “partner” to Tom Cruise rather than his “love interest” (which often happens in most action movies), so we don't have to watch the mandatory kissing scene. Seriously, sometimes movies are better off without kissing, Hollywood needs to learn that.
I didn't watch this alone, but this type of movie is (honestly speaking) best for watching alone because you will totally forget you have a friend sitting beside you! I mean it. It's totally worth watching alone. In some scenes, like the car-motorcycle chase, it was even more thrilling than The Matrix Reloaded or Furious 7. The chase is staged like racers at MotoGP, as you can see on the still image. Speaking of which, Furious 7 was one of the top action movies of the year, but MIRN has a better combination of action and drama, so we can safely say there is almost no wasted time for unnecessary boring drama. Well, there were some moments when Tom Cruise was panicked and stressed out, and that's probably the only drama we experienced throughout the entire movie.
If I had to pick, the only movie that could MIRN so far this year is Kingsman: The Secret Service. That movie is strong and neat also, the equal competitor of MIRN. The upcoming release, James Bond's Spectre has a tough one to beat already. We'll see later if Daniel Craig can do better than Tom Cruise. ;)
