The Green Watch, part 11.

If there's a particularly sticky sticking point that sticks in the craw of veganism more so than others, it's the issue of honey.

We've touched on the subject of bee spit before, and there appear to be at least three camps of belief:

I believe you are correct, sir.

Having ethical objections to eating honey is ridiculous. Besides the fact that bees will likely go extinct if we don't keep domesticated hives and sell honey to support the practice, bees are essentially free. They can leave anytime they want, and they do sometimes. Beekeepers simply offer them protection from the elements, medicine, fields of bee flowers, and security from foreign insect invaders including robber bees. If you wanted to grant bees ethical equality and boycott something, I would boycott almonds. Every year scads of hives are shipped from all over the US on hot, rough-riding trucks to pollinate the almond groves in California. When they all get to the groves, the bees are stressed and weak, and they begin to trade diseases. I'd put money on it that this practice is the major culprit in colony collapse disorder, which is believed to be responsible for wiping out wild and domesticated honey bees in record numbers. We'll lose way more than honey if the bees go away. Man, anti-honey vegans and "Bee Movie" really tense my adrenal glands.
