[ History ] :

Gilbert Nightray (or Gil for short) is the second adopted son of the Nightray Household. But his history goes way before that.

Gilbert was found in the Vessalius garden as a young child, along with no memories except for his name. His first meeting with Oz Vessalius terrifies him since Oz was so forward about him being his new servant and all (Oz also declares Gil to be one year younger than himself since his age was unknown). When Oscar goes to leave, Gilbert freaks out and moves to follow him, but ends up tripping over a rug instead, leaving him in the warpath of a falling flower vase, which Oz, heroically, drops down on Gil to prevent him from being hurt. Gil goes on another crybaby trip, but Oz hits him over the head, saying it was the master’s job to protect the servant. Gil didn’t complain after that.

Around the time of Oz’s coming-of-age ceremony, Oz asks Gil to perform in it as well, being the one to drop the robe over his shoulders once the event is complete. Gil refuses, saying a lowly servant such as him had no right. After Oz leaves with Ada to go get ready, Gil is left alone and gets attacked and possessed by a member of the Baskervilles. At the ceremony, Gil stabs Oz, but when B-Rabbit shows up, Gil gets thrown back and passes out. When he awakens, he runs up to the group of cloaked men ready to send Oz to the Abyss, demanding to know what Oz has down and catches a glimpse the face of one of the men and pauses in his actions. Oz charges at the man with a sword, whom Gil jumps in front of, shouting for Oz to stop, but it is too late, and Oz slashes him, rendering him unconscious.

When Gilbert wakes up, he comes to realize his master was plunged into the Abyss and runs, eventually found by Xerxes Break, who informs him he is to be adopted by the Nightray House like his younger brother. Throughout the ten-year period Oz is gone, he‘s grows to be a trained gunman and even kills to obtain the Nightray Family‘s chain, Raven. He makes a contract and its power can be used to suppress B-Rabbit’s strength and keep Oz’s illegal seal from moving too quickly. He goes under the alias name of “Raven” at this time.

When Oz is thrown out of Abyss, Gil is the first to be by his side, but keeps his true identity to himself until Oz finds out in a quite shocking way. From then on, he drops the tough guy cold persona and becomes the temperamental, spastic and useless servant he really is. Reluctantly, he follows Oz and Alice (B-Rabbit) to track down her memories, despising the chain’s very existence, but holds his tongue most of the time for Oz’s sake.

He seeks out Vincent, his younger brother, after learning some truths, to which Vincent crawls inside his head and twists his thoughts around. Does he really want Alice dead? He knows that mindset is there, deep inside, but he just cannot bring himself to do it.

On his way back to Pandora, Gilbert sulks in his thoughts, wanting some answers.

[ Personality ] :

Gilbert is a mix of many feelings. He can be either caring, scared, angry, depressed, protective, etc. The list can go on and on.

Oz is Gil’s everything. Therefore, he is usually on the receiving end of Gil’s emotions. He does everything in his power to make sure his Young Master is safe from harm. He gets very upset when Oz hides things from him, such as when his time seal moves. He’ll go into a soundless depression and avoid everybody. He makes it quite obvious he’s angry, and even shows some physical aspect of it on Oz, such a knock over the head, but nothing is ever violent. Gil will never waver from his loyalty to Oz, promising him to be at his side forever, though he still feels ashamed for adopting the Nightray name (as they are the current suspects for the murder of Oz‘s mother).

At a young age, Gilbert was quite the introverted crybaby, making him an easy target to pick on by Oz. But Gil always went back for more.

Older, Gil has matured and grown to be quite the handsome young man. Girls swoon over him, which he is completely oblivious to. He‘s normally serious and a chain smoker to the core (though he‘s tried to quit nine different times). The hat he always wears was a gift from Ada, Oz‘s younger sister, and he cherishes it deeply.

He hates Alice, or rather, he used to. He knows she is the reason for Oz’s soon-to-be demise. Despite the horrifying thoughts he’s had about killing her, he can’t bring himself to do so as a friendship is beginning to develop between them, albeit odd. He is starting to find himself protecting her as well.

Gil also has a fear of being left behind. When Break makes a comment about Oz not needing him anymore, Gil goes into a range of different thoughts and outcomes. He strives to be needed and uses that as his purpose in life. Otherwise, he sees himself as completely worthless.

Gilbert can also be shown as wee bit insane. He has maniacal thoughts, normally induced by Vincent‘s words in flashbacks.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :

Oz is his strength and pretty much his reason for existing. He will do anything for him.

He’s also quite the cook and pretty cool (on the outside).

HE HATES CATS. They are his biggest fear and would prefer if the small, hairy beasts would just fall off the face of the Earth.

Alcohol is also not his forte. He’s quite the lightweight and when drunk, reverts back to his younger self, crying over every little thing.

[ Other Important Facts ] :

Pretty much explained elsewhere. He picks fights with Alice and hates the nickname Seaweed Head, as he is often called by her. He’s also often called useless.

His weapons of choice are his two guns he keeps by his side, since he‘s quite the sharp shooter.

[ Sample ] :

He does not even remember how it happened.

It is an awful feeling, to be this weak, to feel this useless. Gilbert tries to move, his coat a little heavier due to it being sopping wet. His head is pounding and chills swoop up and down his spine. He cannot even tell if the moisture on his temple was the same that covered his body or sweat.

“What happened…?” he whispers to no one. He manages to open an eye and glances around to what he determines to be an alley. There is no light except for the streetlamp down the way. “Damn, my body hurts.” As if something has been torn away from me…

All he could remember was he had been walking home from the Nightray mansion. Vincent had riled him up once more and not only that, Oz--

“O-Oz!” Gilbert shouts pathetically and attempts to push himself up into a kneeling position, using the wall next to him as a leaning post. That’s right! His seal--I felt it move!

Gilbert raises his hand and removes the white glove. His eyes widen as he observes the mark located there, as it had not been there before. “What is this?” Then it hits him. Raven is no longer there, either.
