Second Best and Candy Poison

Oct 26, 2006 17:03

I randomly felt like writing drabbles last night. Couldn't sleep. This is what I came up with.

Title: Second Best
Rating: G
Genre: Angst
Length: 410
Pairings: Harry/Ginny, Harry/Draco
Summary: It's always been about the one Harry can't have anymore.

She assaults me the moment I walk through the door of our charming cottage. She yells about how she doesn't get me, can't take it any longer. The garbage disposal is running in the background. So she found my porn stash, my real one, not the one I put obviously under the mattress so she can find it. The fake one full of naked girls so she'll think I'm over you.

"I love you," whispering. She stops in her storm up the wooden stairs, almost tripping over the duster at work. I'm momentarily distracted by the white feathers, tints of yellow from the sun. No matter how long I live in the wizarding world I cannot get used to floating objects. She starts her stomping again. "Ginny..." pleadingly.

Her hair slaps her face and neck with the force of her head whip. Narrowed eyes glare into me, anger crackling like fire. I'm stunned; I feel as if I've been doused in cold water. Her eyes are brown, not grey, but the emotion conveyed is the same as yours that last day, when you left me for family. Anger, hurt, regret, confusion.

"What is it that you want from me, Harry?" her voice cracks, hands flinging out to nick the white-washed walls. "I'm not Draco Malfoy, and I never will be if that's what you're waiting for."

Doused. I'm a Malfoy, and I'll never turn to the side of the light if that's what you're waiting for. Tears prickle my eyes, burning. I wanted you so much when you left, still want you now. But Ginny's the next best thing.

Mistaking my tears, she caves. I can tell by the way her eyes slide wearily to the right, the worn banister, and her lips part with a sigh.

Later, after she falls asleep in my arms, I creep to the sink to see if any of my pictures can be salvaged. I have to turn off the garbage disposal and I know then and there they are gone, destroyed. Those pictures of you were in there, enclosed in a small yellow envelope. A crinkle travels from my foot; the yellow envelope lies there, ripped. Face down on the maple table I find your pictures, finger-marks along the edges. After finding a new hiding place I crawl back into bed, nuzzling my face into the pale skin of her back. If it weren't for the freckles I could pretend it was you.

Title: Candy Poison
Rating: PG
Genre: Fluff/Humor
Length: 325
Pairing: Harry/Draco
Summary: Living with a Death Eater can be threatening.

"Someone's trying to poison us!" The heavy door shut with a snap. Harry looked up from an Auror profile in time to see Draco's furious look before a small bag of candy landed in front of him. "I told you, I did. Just because you're the savior of the world doesn't mean they won't go after you. You're living with a Death Eater, for fuck's sake!"

Harry frowned, peering at the innocent clear bag, colourful singularly wrapped candies inside. "It's candy, Draco," he said slowly, letting it sink in.

"No shit." Draco pointed an accusatory finger at the bag. "Why would someone be giving us candy?"

Harry tore off the little paper shaped like a pumpkin and read aloud, "'You've been hit by the Halloween Ghost! When it gets dark leave another candy bag on someone's doorstep!' See, perfectly fine." He opened the bag and to the utter horror etched on Draco's face, popped one candy corn in his mouth. He moaned softly; it was soft and sweet, exactly the way he liked them.

By the time he finished the candy, Draco was looking at him as if he were a suicidal idiot. Harry pointed out, "I'm still alive."

Draco scowled. "It hasn't been that long yet. Just wait."

Two minutes of staring later, Harry grabbed Draco's sweater sleeve and pulled him down, attaching their lips. Draco melted into the kiss, but then it must have hit him why Harry tasted so sweet, because he jerked away.

"You -- now I'm poisoned too, all because you trust too much!"

Harry pushed the candy bag away and studied the profile. "If being with you means I have to live with the threat of being poisoned, I'll live with it."

Draco huffed and stomped up to their bedroom, a pink flush on his cheeks. Harry smiled and set aside his work. He tossed the rest of the candy in the wastepaper can, compromising, and followed Draco up.
