"Tyler, I told you, you can't go with us to find Stefan."
"Why not?" Tyler asks angrily, pushing himself up from his spot on the sofa.
"Because the full moon is coming up and we don't know where we'll be."
"I'll go far out into the woods. I'll find somewhere abandoned, far away from anyone. It's just for one night, Care," Tyler argues.
"No," she shakes her head.
"You're not leaving without me."
"Yes I am." She stands her ground, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Damn it Caroline," he says running his fingers through his hair. "I have to be there. What if something happens?"
"Damon and Bonnie will be there too," she says.
"You know Damon will protect Bonnie over you if it'll help him get Stefan. Who's going to protect you Caroline?"
"I can take care of myself."
No you can't. He bites his tongue. "You shouldn't have to."
Caroline turns towards the doors and smoothes down her dress. "Never mind. We're ruining a perfectly good party. Let's go, I'm sure you're mom's trying to find you already an-"
"-Caroline, we're not done," Tyler interrupts her.
She turns back towards him. There's a moment of silence, then, with her eyes on the hardwood floors beneath them when she says softly, "you're too much of a liability."
All the air rushes out of his lungs. "What?"
Caroline's at his side instantly, her hands on his forearms trying to soothe him. "You haven't learned to completely control the wolf yet. And Klaus will do something to provoke you and we can't have you transforming-"
He breaks away from her and she stops. He can't look at her. She knows how hard he's been working on his temper but right now, this could blow all he's worked so hard for. He can feel the wolf stirring, itching and he stretches and clenches his fingers as if it would help. He can't believe this.
"Tyler-"
"No" he says, rounding on her. "And have you learned to control all your urges Caroline?" he taunts her. He walks towards, neck outstretched and he knows his heart is beating rapidly because he's angry. He knows she can hear it, can smell it. He's backed her into a bookshelf and his mouth is right next to her ear, his neck right there for the taking. "Are you telling me you don't want me at all right now?" he whispers. And he can hear the tell-tale signs of her deep breaths, the ones she takes to calm herself down, even as his face is buried in her neck.
"Not fair," she breathes and he can't help but smile.
They both love to play dirty.
There's a knocking on the door, and they both turn towards the sound but don't move from their positions. "You'd better hurry up in there. Elder Lockwood wants to start her party and she can't do it without her little puppy," they hear Damon from the other side of the door, chuckling as he walks away.
Tyler loosens his grip on her and takes a step back, knowing they both have a show to put on tonight.
"Please Tyler?" she asks him with wide eyes.
He takes a moment. He wants to protect her, and if staying behind is the best way to do so then he will. "Fine," he relents. "But you're updating me every hour. Promise?"
"Promise," Caroline agrees with a kiss.
