“Mom,” the voice said and Kahlan found herself confused. The voice was almost the same as hers and none of her daughters ever sounded like that. Lifting her gaze from the papers sprawled out on her desk, the Mother Confessor found herself face to face with a younger version of herself. The white dress and the dark hair falling in waves around her shoulders reminded her of how she had looked over a decade previously when she first met Richard. It didn’t make sense but she found herself at a loss for words. Luckily her doppelganger spoke for her. “Mommy what’s going on?”
Kahlan’s hand rested on the swell of her belly as her mind reeled with all the different possibilities. This was magic and Zedd would be able to figure it out, wouldn’t he? After all things like this had happened before and she was certain of that. “Lyra?” Kahlan’s voice was tentative as she took a step towards the mirror image of her younger self.
When her doppelganger nodded, Kahlan sighed. “What happened, Mommy? Why do I look like you?” Kahlan wished there was a simple answer but she had no idea what that would be. At times like this she wished that the People’s Palace wasn’t full of magical objects that could hurt her family. Luckily Lyra seemed unhurt but all magic has consequences. She didn’t know how long that would be the case.
She reached up and rubbed her temple before shrugging. “I’m not sure, sweetheart but we will figure it out. Let’s go find Grandpa Zedd and you can tell me what happened while we look for him. Does that sound okay?”
Lyra smiled a little bit and nodded. Kahlan could tell that her daughter was scared but she was holding herself together well. The young girl was becoming an excellent Confessor and it made Kahlan proud. “I found a little mirror,” Lyra said as she and Kahlan started walking out of the Mother Confessor’s office. “When I looked in it suddenly there was gold light and then I looked like you. What happened?”
Suddenly all the pieces fell into place and Kahlan knew exactly what had happened. Memories of when she’d encountered this problem during the quest to defeat came to mind as well as the jealousy she’d felt upon learning that Richard had gone swimming with a woman he’d thought was her. That mirror had caused more than enough trouble for one lifetime and she’d hoped that Zedd had locked it away somewhere safe. Apparently that hadn’t happened like she had wanted. “Where is the mirror?” Kahlan asked with a hint of worry in her voice as she grabbed her daughter’s hand. It was strange to know that it was Lyra and see her full grown but there was nothing that could be done about it until they had the mirror.
“It’s in my room,” Lyra said as they walked. “Why?”
Kahlan smiled a tiny bit as they changed course and began heading for Lyra’s bedroom. “I know what happened. I’ve dealt with this magic before, a long time ago not long after I met your father.” There was a long story she could have told Lyra about the mirror and how Zedd had taken on the form of a tavern maiden to trick the D’Harans but she knew Lyra was worried. The young girl wanted her body back and Kahlan couldn’t blame her.
“Do you know how to fix it?”
She nodded and guided her daughter around a corner, nearly running right into her husband in the process. “Richard,” she said slightly relieved to have found someone who knew a little more about this type of magic than she did. “Come with me.”
His eyebrows rose and he looked between the two of them with a frown on his face. “Not until you tell me what’s going on.”
Kahlan sighed and rubbed her belly where their unborn child kicked beneath her hand. “Richard, it’s the Mirror. Montress’ Mirror, remember? Lyra found it.”
Understanding seemed to wash over Richard and he nodded. “Don’t worry Lyra,” he said as he turned to the younger looking of the two women. “I know how to fix it.”
“The mirror is in my room,” she said with a sheepish smile. It was obvious that Lyra knew she’d be in trouble for getting into Zedd’s things but they’d deal with that once she was back to her old self.
Richard nodded and the three of them made their way down the halls until they found Lyra’s room. The mirror was resting on her bed just where she’d left it and Kahlan hoped that neither Rebecca nor Kayla had stumbled upon the mirror while it was unattended. “Okay sweetie,” Kahlan said with a reassuring pat to her daughter’s shoulder. “You’ll be back to normal in just a minute.”
Lyra nodded and Richard picked up the mirror. “Just look into the mirror,” he said before opening the mirror to face their daughter. The air around Lyra seemed to shimmer golden before it faded and their seven year old daughter was once again the size of a child. “See, all better.”
Kahlan grabbed a normal mirror off her daughter’s dressing table and held it up for Lyra. “Beautiful, just like you always are.” She was so grateful that her daughter was back to normal. A lot of problems could have come if they hadn’t been able to quickly fix this situation.
“Thank you,” Lyra said before grabbing onto both her mother and father, hugging them tightly and burying her face in the crook of Richard’s neck.
Richard ran his hand down his daughter’s dark hair before smiling. “You don’t need to thank us sweetheart. Just promise you’ll stay out of Grandpa Zedd’s things.”
“That’s all we want,” Kahlan added before kissing the top of their little girl’s head.
Lyra lifted her head and nodded. “I promise,” she said softly before smiling at her parents. Things were back to normal now and that was all they needed. Hopefully they’d be lucky enough to never have a problem like this again; however, both Richard and Kahlan knew that their good luck never lasted. They just needed to take what they had because sooner or later something else would throw a loop in their life. Until then they would just enjoy all the time they had together.
