Midnight Surprise

She was glad they were getting this special time away from Aydindril just the two of them.  Richard had swept them away from the hustle and bustles of the city until they were all alone, secluded in their small cabin in the mountains.  It had been months since they had been alone for any significant amount of time so this was all the more special.

At first Kahlan had been reluctant to go on this little trip to the mountains but now that they had arrived, she couldn’t have been happier.  She didn’t care that the cold mountain air was biting her skin or that the snow was falling in large heavy flakes, it was beautiful and she was with the man she loved.  That was all she needed.  She didn’t understand Richard’s insistence as to why they had to go on this little vacation now instead of waiting for spring but he was adamant and now that she was nestled in a small cabin in the mountains with him, she was glad he had insisted.

They had spent the day together exploring one another’s bodies until they were so exhausted they couldn’t move, they just lay in each other’s arms and listened to the sounds of the mountains.    The sound of a wolf howling off in the distance and the wind rustling the trees eventually lulled them both into a peaceful sleep, wrapped up in the cocoon of their lovers body and the quilt even the bitter cold outside couldn’t cause them any chill.

The moonlight was streaming in through the windows, the glowing orb just peeking out from behind the snowcapped peaks causing the snow covered mountains to glisten in the light.  Richard had been awake for awhile getting dressed and packing a small bag with supplies they might need if just in case.  If being a woods guide taught him anything it was to always be prepared.  Tonight he was going to show Kahlan the surprise, something he had dreamt of showing her since he first met her.

He made his way back over to the bed watching silently for a moment as the love of his life slept.  She was wrapped tightly in an ivory sheet, her dark locks spilling across both the pillows and the milky expanse of bare flesh that covered her back and shoulders.  He forced himself to ignore the sudden surge of arousal that flooded his body at seeing his beloved sleeping so peacefully and with such a sweet look on her face.  It pained him to wake her but he had to, he wanted her to see this so he had no choice.  He brushes her long, dark hair off of her neck, leaning in and kissing her right behind the ear before whispering to her. “You need to wake up Kahlan.  I have a surprise for you.”

Kahlan shifted in her sleep, Richard’s voice attempting to draw her out of her dreams.  “Richard…” He heard his name on her lips as barely more than a whisper as he slowly brought her into a state of semi-consciousness. He trailed kisses over the exposed creamy column of flesh, eliciting a moan from somewhere deep in her throat.  “Richard I’m sleeping.”

“You don’t sound asleep.  Come on, I have a surprise for you.”

“Can’t this surprise wait until morning?”  She grumbled sleepily with a tone to her voice that made it clear that if he let her sleep, she would make it up to him later.

He kissed her temple before whispering in her ear.  “As tempting as that sounds, we can’t wait until morning.  The surprise will be gone by then.”

Now she was curious.  What kind of surprise would be gone by morning?  She tilted her head, casting a questioning gaze in his direction before sitting up.  “Alright.  You win.”

Richard smiled his whole face aglow with the joy that he was finally getting to show her.  He knew she had never seen it before and had wanted to show her for a long time.  He was finally getting his chance.  He watched her get up and dressed, his eyes lingering on her perfect form as she slipped into her dress.  “Like what you see, Seeker?”

The low groan that escaped him didn’t go without her notice.  “Very much so, Mother Confessor, but you knew that already.”

Her lips twisted up into a playful smirk at his answer, using all the restraint she had to keep from persuading him to let them stay in bed.  As if sensing her thoughts he smirked at her, a hungry look of pure desire plastered upon his face.  “Later, right now I have something to show you.

Her lower lip trembled in a small pout but she said nothing, complying with his wish as he took her hand and led her out into the cold.  She was grateful for the extra cloak he had wrapped around her before they left, pulling it tightly around her she smiled, it smelled like him.  She inhaled deeply, letting the scent of her beloved fill her nose.  She held the cloak securely around her, using the fabric to shield her from the wind.

The wind whipped around them, Kahlan having to hold her hair in her fist to keep it from flying in her face.  She hoped that once they reached where they were going the wind would die down.  They had only been outside for a few minutes and she was already shivering.  Richard wrapped his arm around her waist, giving her warmth and helping her up the snow covered slope.  They were almost there.

Not far from the top of the slope the wind did quiet, the howling stopping and soon all they could hear was the snow crunching beneath their boots and their own heavy breathing.  Breaking the tree line they walked out into the open, Kahlan gasped at the sight before them as they came closer to the edge of the small cliff.  She couldn’t believe what she was seeing.  The sky was ablaze with so many colors, it was beautiful.  She stood in silence, her head resting on Richard’s chest as she watched the colors dance before her.  Although she was sure they could be seen for leagues she still felt as if they were putting on that show just for her, like Richard had made some kind of deal with the Creator to bring that beauty down from the Halls of Eternal Peace so he could show her.

The sight before her took her breath away and brought tears to her eyes.  It was the most wonderful surprise Richard could have thought of and it was well worth getting out of bed for.  After a long silence Richard finally spoke, his voice filled with all the love he felt for Kahlan and his joy at her reaction to seeing the colors dancing against the blackened sky.  “Do you like it?”

She turned to him, her eyes brimming with tears brought forth by not only the beauty of seeing the Lights for the first time but the thoughtfulness of Richard to bring her out here to see them.  “I love it.  I was never sure if the stories of the Lights were true or if it was just an old fable.  Thank you for bringing me here and letting me see the truth for myself.”

He kissed her softly, showing her just how much he loved her and how grateful he was to be the one to show her this. They exchanged passionate, loving kisses beneath the colors bathing the sky in their glow.  Breaking the kiss, Richard rested his forehead against Kahlan’s, his nose brushing against hers as he stared deeply into her sapphire eyes.  “I love you.”

“I love you too, Richard.”

She shivered again and Richard tightened his grip on her waist.  As much as he didn’t want this moment to end, he didn’t want her to catch cold either.  “Come on; let’s head back to the cabin.  I don’t want you getting sick on me.”

She nuzzled closer not wanting to end the perfect moment.  “I won’t get sick.”

Taking her hand Richard started to lead her back down the path, intent on keeping her warm one way or another.  “No you won’t get sick because I’m taking you back to the cabin and keeping you warm.”

She smirked at him as they descended the mountain towards the cabin, the snow crunching beneath their feet.  “Is that a promise?”

He stopped, pulling her into his arms and kissing her until they were both out of breath.  “Yes and it’s one I fully intend to keep.”

They continued the rest of the way to the cabin as Kahlan decided that getting pulled out of bed in the middle of the night and taken into the cold was worth it.  After all she was planning on making sure Richard warmed her up and right now she was very cold.
