Kahlan was restless... it wasn’t she had the middle shift which was during the darkest hours but that she knew they were travelling close to what was left of the Nightwisp forest.
A few years back, at least one of her fairy friends would be coming out to meet with her. Nightwisps and Confessors went so many years back... their territory was also under the direct protection of the Mother Confessor. Any violation of Nightwisp area would be considered an attack to Aydindril and met with an immediate response by the Confessors.
Kahlan sighed. She missed Shar, the Nightwisp that helped her through the barrier on her quest to find the Seeker and gave her life for him when she stopped an arrow meant for Richard. She was curious to know what happened to the Nightwisp she saved with Cara, if she survived in the end and how her children fared.
Kahlan stood up decisively for a quite round around their camp trying to shake off unpleasant thoughts. Her dark leathers provided with good cover during the night. She quietly and stealthy circled their camp and sat on a fallen trunk a bit further from where she was sitting last.
She was alert when she felt a soft buzz in the air. She couldn’t place it as she was looking around trying to make out where it was coming from. As soon as she saw it, she heard a low purr carried in the night breeze.
She smiled and whispered in response to the Nightwisp approaching.
“Yes, I am Kahlan Amnell.”
Kahlan extended her arm in front of her and opened her palm for the wisp to sit. They talked for a little while and Kahlan was overjoyed to hear the news she was bringing her while the wisp was happy to finally know the protector of their kind. Dennee, Kahlan’s sister, had already got in touch from Aydindril some time ago.
The time flew and Richard woke up for his shift and he found Kahlan still talking to the wisp. He approached them only to hear Kahlan whispering “yes, that’s Richard, the Seeker of Truth”; Kahlan paused for a second and then giggled almost as if the Nightwisp commented. Richard blushed.
He whispered his greeting to the wisp and she purred back. He wasn’t used to their language yet but, according to Kahlan and Cara, it only took a few moments for someone to pick it up.
“...I have to go now, they are expecting me. I’m glad to have finally met you Kahlan Amnell, as well as you, Richard Cypher. We are expecting both of you and your friend Cara whenever you get a breathing chance.”
The Nightwisp kept glowing as she now hovered over Kahlan’s open palm.
“Remember what we talked about, Kahlan Amnell. We know you will succeed but there is more darkness awaiting for you... be vigilant. There are times of great happiness and great danger ahead.”
“We’ll do our best.” Kahlan whispered filled with determination.
The Nightwisp glowed even brighter for a moment.
“The time has come. Farewell” she said and a few moments later Richard and Kahlan lost her against the forest’s morning colours.
Kahlan hugged Richard.
“So? What did she say?” Richard asked her impatiently.
Kahlan smiled widely while holding his hands in hers.
“That all will be well... their forest is coming alive again... my kind will survive!”
“These are great news, Kahlan!” He paused for a moment “Anything else?” he smirked.
Kahlan chuckled.
“The rest was girl talk. And now I need to catch up on some sleep. Goodnight, Richard!” Kahlan kissed him swiftly and lightly on his nose giggling softly while stealing playful glances back at Richard on her way to her bedroll.
