Summary: Regina and Daniel rode away from the Mill's manor in the night.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Regina walked quietly outside the family manor. This was it. She was leaving. She felt sorry for her father but she was certain he would be able to see the reason behind it; Regina could not live anymore in the same house with Cora. Things had got even worse after the king’s proposal.
She was to meet Daniel in the stables.
After she left the porch, she made a run for the stables where a dim light was shining through the doors’ slits.
“Daniel!” she called as she run to his arms.
“Regina! Are you ready?” he asked her and held her tight.
Regina broke the embrace and smiled broadly.
“Yes! Let’s go. I brought two blankets and a bit of food, do you think they are enough?”
Daniel took a quick look of the knapsack Regina handed him.
“Don’t you worry about that, but yes, they are all going to come in handy.”
Daniel took her hand and guided her to Rocinante’s stall, her horse.
“Take her out; I’ll be right behind you.”
Regina went into the stall and found her horse ready for her. She petted her along her neck and mane, and spoke to her softly.
“Hey, girl? Are you ready for a night walk?” Rocinante neighed softly and Regina giggled.
“I’m glad because we are going to be free soon!”
She took the horse out and waited for Daniel whom she could hear bringing another horse for him, Artax.
Daniel brought his finger in front of his mouth to signal Regina to be quiet as he pointed the way they’d be taking around the stable to the back and through the forest avoiding the manor as much as possible.
They kept going for more than half an hour walking in front of their horses that, as if they could understand the importance of their leave, kept as quiet as possible. There was no sign anyone had noticed their absence and, if things would go as planned, no one would until the sun rose. They had been under the cover of the forest for a long time now and Daniel thought that they’d gone silent long enough. He stopped and turned to Regina smiling. Regina matched his expression and fell to his chest.
“Daniel, I can’t believe it!! We are free!!” Regina whispered excitedly and tears began to fill her eyes.
“Let’s ride and get away once and for all, Regina.” Daniel completed her thought and they did...
It wasn’t long though before Artax and Rocinante, while galloping, became alarmed. Daniel and Regina realized only too late that tree branches were extended and grabbing for them. They were snatched off their saddles and remained hang up there, their horses frightened disappeared in the dark.
“No! This can’t be!” Regina exhaled almost in the verge of panic, flailing to break free.
“Regina, be strong... we’ll get through this” Daniel also struggled to get out of his binds.
Suddenly purple smoke appeared in front of them and a familiar voice cut through the night cold air as Cora materialized.
“Did you really believe you’d leave my house and I would not know?”
Summary: Emma and Regina talk reality after Emma and Mary-Margaret return from the Enchanted Forest.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Regina stood at the back of the cheering crowd. Snow and Emma had just returned from the Enchanted Forest and everyone was happy... mostly, except for those who had no interest welcoming the real Sheriff back in town. Besides, Regina didn’t want to give any excuses for people to think differently about her and Emma. So, when Emma moved through the crowd towards her, Regina shifted uncomfortably on her feet. Everyone was curious as to the words about to be exchanged.
“Ms. Swan” Regina greeted.
“Madame Mayor.”
“I am not the Mayor anymore...” Regina cut her off glaring at her. “You can call me Ms Mills.”
Emma made a gigantic effort to suppress an emerging belly laugh and cleared her throat instead.
“Of course, Ms Mills.”
Regina was playing the disgruntled, overthrown tyrant so she paused a few seconds and tried to look displeased.
“Welcome back. I hope you found the Enchanted Forest charming?”
Emma smirked.
“That’s not exactly how I’d call it... but, yeah, whatever.”
“Good. Now, if you’ll excuse me I have to go.” Regina added hurriedly and turned on her heel before Emma managed to utter another word.
“Emma, come! We are having a party for you and Snow at Granny’s!” Ruby called her excitedly.
“Ruby, you go ahead. I need to check a few things at the Station and I’ll be back. Besides... I need my gun. Tell Mary-Margaret, I won’t take long” Emma said while following Regina with the corner of her eye.
“Okay, we’ll be waiting for you.”
As the crowd streamed to Granny’s or on their own way, Emma headed towards the Sheriff’s station.
Regina was leaning against Emma’s desk. As soon as Emma entered Regina hurried and threw her arms around her. Emma held her tight; neither of them spoke for a moment, until Emma broke the embrace.
“I’ve missed you” Emma said running her hand over Regina’s cheek. Regina leaned into it and purred a quiet but sincere “me too” looking Emma straight in the eyes. Emma, without hesitation, kissed her passionately. Regina grabbed a handful of blonde hair as she returned the passion accordingly. Emma broke the kiss breathless.
“Regina, I can’t stay long. I have to go, they’re expecting me.” Sadness reflected in her eyes as she spoke the words.
“I know. I will be dropping by because I want to say goodnight to Henry.” Regina had to swallow hard at the mention of their son.
“Come on then,” Emma smiled a little too excitedly as she took Regina’s hand in hers, “let’s go.”
Regina bit her lip as she pondered the idea for a moment.
“No,” she spoke, finally, “we can’t. You go, I’ll come later.”
The blonde’s smile faded as she remembered, “right. We hate each other…”
The used-to-be mayor nodded with a sad smile.
“Oh, the hell with them!” Emma started, “why do we even bother with this whole secret thing? I don’t care what anyone else thinks, I don’t care if the whole world knows! I love you.”
Regina felt the sting in her eyes, there was nothing she wanted more than to be with her eternally, to share their love proudly with the world. But she knew all too well that that could never happen. Their love had to be kept secret. And she also knew… that it would never last. Emma was no Daniel, her patience was extremely limited… and Emma hardly knew her - the real her.
“Come on Gina, we’ll go together,” she pleaded impatiently, just as Regina expected; “they can make of us whatever the hell they want.”
Regina shook her head, pushing away the pain. It was in moments like this that she remembered… It was in these moments that she almost saw Daniel in her lover’s eyes.
“No.” she said coldly. The sheriff was clearly taken aback by her lover’s change of tone. That was one of the things about this woman that irritated her to no end; her expressions, her emotions would change unexpectedly, like a flip of a switch. And yet, in a twisted way, part of her loved it.
“No?” her voice was quiet, confused.
“I won’t do that,” Regina bit her lip and looked away, softening her tone, “we can’t do that.”
“Why not, Gina?”
“Because…” her voice cracked and she hated it for betraying her like that.
The blonde closed the space between them, caressing her lover’s cheeks comfortingly, “tell me.” She whispered. The brunette closed her eyes, enjoying the warmth, the long missed touch of her partner. She wished she could, she wished the walls around her hadn’t grown so tall, but they were there for her protection - and for Emma’s.
“Just go,” she whispered in return. Emma opened her lips to refute, so she forced her voice louder, “Go.” She pulled slapped her hand away.
“But Gina…” Emma was more than a little surprised, and yet, she wasn’t at all.
“Just go!” She raised her voice and pushed her away.
Emma stumbled on her feet momentarily. Once she had regained her balance, she turned and walked to the door. Regina simply watched her.
As she opened the door, the sheriff turned one last time to look at her. Her hurt morphed into anger as she spoke, “Henry was right about you. You are the Evil Queen. And we’re done. Goodbye Regina.” And with that, she left, slamming the door shut behind her.
Regina stared into the closed door for what seemed like forever. She felt a sharp pain in her heart, one that she remembered all too well. She didn’t know whether to scream or cry. So she just stood there, staring.
