"So raise your glass and sing along like one big alcoholic family..."

No, not a comment on my weekend among relatives. Last Wednesday the Inner City Surfers and the Sorrys played a show together at Gus's, and I haven't had a chance to write anything about it since then. In the interest of tidying things up--here we go.

The Sorrys
Apparently life intervened and they haven't played since the summer--last time I saw them was with the Surfers at Gus's, back in late spring, I think. They played about a dozen songs and were in fine form--sounded really good, were having a great time, and the lead singer was hilarious. They attracted a couple of drunken new fans--I dunno what it is about Gus's, but the drunks are very interactive, and the bands always seem to handle them well.

I was speaking to Trevor, the lead singer, and totally forgot to ask him whether a Sorrys song was featured in the TV spots for the Bluenose Marathon this spring. It sounded like them, anyway.

The Surfers
The bass player was hopping around on crutches, having apparently done something quite painful to his foot or ankle, but seemed in good spirits otherwise. The band was really good sports about the small audience, mostly provided by the Sorrys and their friends. Honestly, next time I am going to stand out on the street and buttonhole people. I'd hate for these guys to get discouraged and stop coming back to Halifax. They get a lot of points for acting like they appreciated the people who did turn out, though.

The set was similar to their last visit, although I think last time they didn't play "Booze and Doobs" and this time they did and I was happy. And now that I am trying to learn guitar myself, I have a better appreciation for how frighteningly good their lead guitarist is. (The cheery bespectacled guy from the Sorrys is no slouch, either!)

And this will have to do for now, although both bands deserve more detailed entries. Sorry. (Heh.)
