I should probably get a file cabinet

So I finally sat down and did my taxes yesterday afternoon. I was hosting the mystery group and had enough cleaning to do that I knew I wasn't going to get to the barn anyway. (It's not that the house was filthy, it's that one of the members of the group is very allergic to cats, so there was much dusting and vacuuming and Febrezing and general airing-out.)

The taxes thing--I make that a much bigger deal than it needs to be. Revenue Canada (that's no longer their name but be damned if I can ever remember the current one) even sends me the simplified return because my taxes are so, well, simple. When I make myself sit down to do it, it takes less than an hour. It's just... math. I make a much bigger deal about math than I need to.

Incidentally, for American friends, I'm not actually late, Tax Day in Canada is April 30th. And since my employer deducts a large amount every year, I've always been in the position of getting some sort of return so the government doesn't really care if I ever file. This year I remembered to attach a void cheque for my line of credit, so any return I get will go directly to pay on that. It's not a fun thing to do with one's return, but even I can be sensible once in a while.

I do need to get a file cabinet. Right now I have a beat-up accordion folder, and if you dumped it out you'd find newspaper clippings, a couple of old stories, and all my returns for the last seven years, photocopied and with my copies of original receipts, each in envelopes marked with the year. I always do that--keep my own copy of each receipt but then photocopy the entire return (including all receipts sent to the government) and retain a copy of that in case I ever get audited or something. It would make sense to have each of these annual envelopes in a file folder in a filing cabinet instead of this battered accordion folder. I need to get on that.

Anyway. Done for another year. I expect I made errors in my math, because I somehow always do, but eh. The phalanx of retired math teachers I imagine working for Revenue Canada will check my sums and adjust accordingly.
