I was about a quarter of the way through a recent mystery read when it occurred to me--of the several suspects on offer, only one of them was not a member of the continuing cast
GUESS WHO DUNNIT!
Ahem. I've read at least a couple of books in which a continuing character turns out to be the killer (on one occasion, though it worked, it was deeply traumatizing!) but for the most part, it's probably a good idea to avoid having only one new-to-this-book suspect. Especially when the plot calls for the introduction of several other new characters, none of whom turn out to have anything at all to do with the mystery.
A lot of paperback-original mysteries are clever and likable and diverting. This one seemed to be on the surface, until I noticed exactly how much I was skimming. Too bad, because the main character was promising.
