I spent entirely too much of the weekend catching up on the world championships of figure skating. If you haven't watched it yet, or couldn't care less, read no further!
Pairs: I don't care that much about this discipline, but it was clear even to me that the winners (Germans Savchenko and Szolkowy) were so much better that their competition that no one else even had a shot. They beat the silver medalists (Chinese team Zhang and Zhang) by nearly 17 points. WITH a fall. That's a major beatdown.
Men: I was so pleased for Evan Lysacek of the U.S. Finally he laid down two fantastic programs in an international event and won the thing. Good for him. I was surprised that Joubert of France managed to stay on the podium after his long program mistakes, but I guess he had a big enough lead after the short.
Ladies: Yu-Na Kim of South Korea. WOW. Talk about laying a beatdown. I can't imagine who could beat her other than herself, because if she skates like that, no one can touch her. Her competition was barely in the same arena.
Dance: I was hoping for Belbin and Agosto, but I just can't take ice dancing seriously. I admire the skill of the skaters, but when the commentators have to say, without laughing, "their program depicts a sad mime in love with the moon," that pretty much indicates to me that "sport" has left the building.
Overall I was pretty pleased.
