The former; I'm sure a life without principles would be less complicated in the short term, at least.

Principles, by nature, are confining. They define the parameters in which one should behave and dictate the necessity of guilt or regret or penance if they're violated.

People can disagree all they'd like, but for a principled man to stay principled, there's very little room with which to operate.
