So I read
THIS ARTICLE. It's about how rich people are turning their walk-in closets into whole rooms with fridges for bubbly and TVs. And these closets are the size of rooms, 400-600 sq. ft. - the larger end of which is larger than my whole apartment. One of the reasons given for this whole weird 'closet as private space' deal is that rich people with big homes apparently lack a private space for themselves and adding, like, a separate room would be too much work. And rich people like hanging out with their stuff, I guess. And want to sit around with their friends in these closets filled with their designer shoes and thousand-dollar underpants and like watch movies and shit.
Quote from the article: "We're seeing the closet become more of a social space," says Alison Schwartz of online real-estate tracker Move.com. Ms. Adams, who founded L.A. Closet Design five years ago, says she tells clients to think of closets as multifunctional living spaces. "[Friends] want to hang out there, they want to see what you have," she says. Going through clothes to purge older items can be done "with your girlfriends over wine." And it's not just ladies, dudes are going for this too with sneaker showcases and sunglasses drawers.
...Seriously. How is this becoming a thing? How can it be either classy or comfortable watching TV surrounded by your t-shirts and shoes? Granted, if you're someone who can afford this sort of thing, they're very nice t-shirts and shoes, but still. The closet (the very large closet) as a social space? I cannot be the only one who finds this whole notion incredibly weird and not a little exhibitionist and 'hey look what I have'. I would not be comfortable watching movies in someone's closet, no matter how nice it was.
I mean, ladies and gentlemen, are we
ONLY A FEW STEPS AWAY FROM THIS?
