It was odd, standing there in Meiko’s bathroom and waiting for the test to change color-or not. But Himawari already felt she knew what the result would be, and that this was all a technicality. It felt a bit surreal, like she was grounded after flying, because she had never anticipated being pregnant this young.

To add to that, she was not even married yet. She couldn’t imagine what her mother’s response would be-anger? Elation? While her mother may not have been the most traditional, there were still certain things she probably would not waver on. For so long, Himawari had acted as the rolemodel for her siblings, always doing as was expected, never breaking any rules; and yet, here she was in a stranger predicament than she would have ever predicted. She would not have guessed that her life would take this turn two weeks ago, and there was still a feeling that this all had to be some sort of dream.

She already had a few friends with children true, but none of them had been unmarried. As far as Himawari knew, she had been responsible with birth control and had always used a condom. Maybe she and Haruto had taken their physical intimacy too far, too quickly-was this like God punishing them? That was just a silly idea, and Meiko’s odd thought process rubbing off on her. This had nothing to do with God or anything; there was always a chance of pregnancy whenever she had sex. It was her fault for not having some sort of back-up, like birth control pills. She should have been more responsible, more careful.

At least she had Meiko, she thought, biting her lip and looking at the closed bathroom door. She was probably out in the hallway tearing everything up with her own anxiousness. Whenever Himawari had needed Meiko, Meiko had been there; there was few people more precious to Himawari than her best friend. She was more like family than anything else, like a missing part of herself she had been born without. To have her support at this time was something she was grateful for. No matter what the result was, Himawari was assured that Meiko would be by her side.

However, Himawari did not know how Haruto would react if the result was positive. They had not been seeing each other for very long, after all, and the undue stress of a baby could possibly be too much for him to handle. Suddenly, she felt her heart twist-it was very well possible that he could leave her. Even if he was already thirty-two, there might be other things he wanted more than settling down with a woman he had just begun seeing. Maybe he would not ask her to marry him, and Himawari would be a single mother. What would become of her then? She had enough money saved up from her job, but that would make her feel like a disgrace to her family. But she could never force Haruto to tie himself down to her.

And he could never doubt the paternity of the child-Himawari knew for a fact he was the only possibility of the father.

Her nerves began to feel frazzled; it was like jumping off a cliff and not being able to see what was underneath her. How much farter was she going to fall?

When she looked at the test, she felt her heart leap in her throat, and it was difficult for her to really decipher her emotions. Was she excited? Relieved, in some way, that her suspicions had been correct? She did feel a little flutter of happiness at seeing that pink cross, knowing that some part of her was moving forward with her life, despite the death and bleakness around her that she had seen. Suddenly, it felt like there was a chance to move on-with Meiko, with Haruto, with her baby.

She pressed a hand to her stomach, struggling between keeping herself from crying or laughing. When she felt she had collected herself, she opened the door slowly, peering out into the hall.

“Ah... Meiko-chan?” she said, stepping out and feeling rather sheepish, “It’s positive. I’m pregnant.”
