Vanishing Act
Jinki is seven when he notices that his his left pinky is a shade fairer than the rest of his hand. It's no big deal, so he ignores it for a month or so.
By the next month, he decides to tell his mom, because it's getting fainter by the day.
Together, they go to the clinic, just in case it's something dangerous, and the doctor tells him something that he never quite understands.
"I'm sorry, Jinki, but you seem to be... disappearing. I don't fully understand it."
It never really stops after that.
He meets Taemin at the park on a sun drenched afternoon, where he usually sits on a bench soaking in the sunlight. It helps him feel a little more solid when he sees the sunlight gleam off his skin.
"What's wrong with your hand?" are his first words to Jinki. He smiles and puts up his right hand-clenches and unclenches his fist to show that it's fine. Taemin sits beside him and grabs his left, the one he's furtively tried to hide under his thigh, and turns it over in his hands. He traces the blood vessels under Jinki's translucent skin.
"Your hand feels like a cloud."
Jinki pulls his hand back defensively. "It's nothing."
"It's not nothing. Is it going to kill you?"
It's oddly comforting when Taemin asks, because no one's really ever dared to. Most of the time, people just smile awkwardly and pretend they can't see the blood coursing beneath his skin.
So he tells Taemin the truth, "I don't know."
"Okay. I'm Taemin, by the way. You looked like you needed a friend," he smiles, grabbing Jinki's left hand again, threading their fingers together. Jinki feels mildly creeped out by Taemin's touchiness, but finds comfort in the fact that Taemin isn't grossed out by him.
They talk about the vanishing for a while to get it out of the way before they move on to things that matter, like recurring dreams or how marshmallows are made. When the park starts to get dark, they move things over to Jinki's place so they can talk some more.
When it's night and Taemin calls his mom to pick him up, Jinki feels as if he's made his very first friend in his fifteen years of living.
They kiss in the bedroom, when it's night time and Jinki turns off the lights so that Taemin can feel like he's kissing a regular person. He objects, but Jinki is adamant. Taemin sighs when their lips meet-it's like kissing fire. Jinki's mouth opens and his tongue flicks against Taemin's like flames licking smoulders.
Taemin curls his fingers in Jinki's hair. The ends come away like ashes in his palms.
Jinki pulls back first. "You okay? We can stop if you want. Just tell me."
"Are you crazy?" he says and pulls Jinki in for another kiss.
"I wish I could be normal," Jinki says to Taemin one day when he's sleeping over. They never really talk about Jinki's condition after the first time, and Taemin always makes Jinki comfortable, even when he finds a new spot with thinning skin. Taemin has always been there, hugging and cuddling with him on the bed with sweet Taemin words till he'd stop tearing and fall asleep.
"There's nothing weird about you," Taemin says. And that's that.
They're on the bed, Taemin curled into Jinki's side, stroking his neck that feels like vapour, pressing his lips against Jinki's pale shoulder. "You're perfect," he mumbles.
He turns on his side and tries to sleep, and wonders if this is a cruel, sick blessing-God's way of letting him watch Taemin's slow, even breathing even while his eyes are closed.
There's a day where Jinki finally breaks down and everything spills over like a monstrous flood. He cries and clings to Taemin's shirt, and all Taemin can do is hold his hand and try not to squeeze too hard.
"I'm barely even here anymore," he says, tears soaking the skin of Taemin's neck. He tries to rub Jinki's back, but it's like trying to touch smoke.
"Stay with me," Jinki says as he starts to quieten down, and Taemin kisses his forehead before they fall asleep in each others arms.
He wakes up with his arms around where Jinki might've been.
