The song continues and Kibum can’t help but notice that Taemin is always just a fraction of a second quicker than he is, and the smallest of an angle slicker than he tries to be.

note a really short piece i wrote in about ten minutes. as such, i have no idea what genre this fic is supposed to fall under.

It’s a foreign concept to Kibum, being second best.

What’s even stranger is being second best to someone two years his junior. He stares into the mirrored walls of the studio and tries to pay attention to the music, letting the bass shudder through his bones, but he keeps getting distracted when he sees Taemin move fluidly from the corner of his eye.

He tries to stop looking by just completely closing his eyes, and dances twice as hard as before when they move together during the routine, and he tries to make sure Taemin doesn’t see how he nearly misses his face when he punches the air.

-

“You do it like this,” Kibum demonstrates how to fall back onto his hand, stopping himself from falling with a palm. “Do it how I’m doing it or you’ll hurt your wrist.”

Taemin ignores him and practices the fall back with ease. He looks to the mirror again as he does it a second time, laughing a little as he does when he sees Kibum staring at him. “Are you tired, Hyung?”

It’s Kibum’s turn to ignore him as he rubs a sore wrist.

The showcase is a day away, and Kibum and Taemin have been practicing 'one last time' several times by Kibum’s request. Their bodies, Kibum thinks, feel a little too hot, and a little too close together in that one part where they clasp hands and pull toward each other. By fault of Taemin (because Kibum would never be so careless), they collide and end up on the floor with Taemin on top of Kibum, his too long hair falling into his eyes.

“Yah, what are you doing,” Kibum shoves the younger boy off himself and gets up, pulling his shirt right. “Watch how you’re dancing.”

Kibum looks at Taemin in distaste, Taemin who has already stood up and started the song again from the beginning to resume the dance. Taemin who doesn’t seem to be assed about anything he says. “Shall we start again, Hyung?”

“Just do it right this time,” and Taemin’s laughing again as he takes his cue and Kibum misses his.

The song continues and Kibum can’t help but notice that Taemin is always just a fraction of a second quicker than he is, and the smallest of an angle slicker than he tries to be.

There are no mistakes when the actual performance rolls around, and Kibum finds himself able to concentrate, even with Taemin’s hair swinging wildly about while he dances, and Taemin’s eyes staring at him intensely as they pull each other forcefully by the hand.

“That was satisfactory, I suppose,” Kibum says to Taemin as they longue about backstage when everything is over, and the stage lights have stopped blinding him.

“We were great, Hyung,” Taemin smiles at him and goes to change.

“Yea well -,”

Kibum doesn’t understand the feeling that rises in his chest when he hears Taemin say those words, even if he’s convinced that his own words have no effect on Taemin whatsoever.

-

Taemin?
Yes, Hyung?
I’m a good dancer, right?
Of course you are, Hyung. You’re the best.

Kibum wants to punch himself in the face when he catches his own wide smile in the mirror of the studio.
