here if you haven't seen 'em.
Thantos wanted to have a party/performance at our house and, since that would be too loud, too late for the little boy, he offered to send us off somewhere for the night. My friend Victoria recommended Langley on Whidbey Island and I'm really glad she did.
Of course, it was a trip with Derrick and Max, so I can't really say it was relaxing, but overall it was a good time. The place we stayed was fabulous--literally on the water, at high tide the waves were lapping right under our little balcony. Huge windows, a gas fireplace, comfy couches, queen size bed on a raised platform, and a kitchenette. Derrick doesn't eat breakfast and Max insists on instant grits in the morning, so it made the most sense to stay somewhere that we could have breakfast in the room.
Now, if only I'd trusted my instincts and bought stuff at the local market (which had lots of organic prepared food) for dinner instead of trying to eat out, we would have had a much better time. Instead we went to this empty dive (because I thought Derrick would want a burger--then he went and ordered fish and chips) with lousy food and worse service. Max wanted to leave after a few minutes and we ended up getting the food to go--at which point the waitress informs me they don't take credit cards (there was a tiny, handwritten sign taped to the "Please wait to be seated" sign which I had overlooked). So I had to use their ATM ... and because I didn't like the food and Max wouldn't touch it, we had to drive over to the grocery store so I could get a can of beans and some instant brown rice for me and Max to eat. (I longed for the tomato and spinach risotto I'd seen at the organic market and felt really stupid.)
Max also didn't nap much Saturday afternoon--only during our stroll through town. As soon as we got back to the room, when I was hoping to sit on the comfy couch and read my mystery novel and stare at the water, he woke up. Derrick tried to distract him for a bit but he kept coming over to the bed to be with me so I gave up reading and just enjoyed the view while Max nursed.
Oh, and it was so nice to be WARM most of the time. Outside it was chilly, but the room was super-warm. And had amazing water pressure in the shower. I kind of wanted to abandon our house and just move in there, but not having a door for the bedroom did prove a problem in getting Max to sleep (I think he finally wore himself out around midnight). And of course the commute to work would suck. :)
I would love to go back there sometime just by myself and really unwind.
