Build a Comm! (Seeking Advice)

Jan 17, 2011 19:10

Constructive criticism: as precious to a writer as gold, and yet as rare as hen's teeth! There could be many reasons why commenters fear to offer this sort of feedback on the stories they read: uncertainty that the criticism will be appreciated by the writer; fear that the writer will be angered that someone dare question their artistic vision; or just plain old shyness!

Likewise, writers might be equally hesitant to seek an in-depth critique of their work: what if their writing really needs as much work as they fear?

Well, this comm is going to attempt to address some of those issues, by giving writers and reviewers the opportunity to share their work and their feedback anonymously.

Pitfalls? You bet!

Feel free to respond honestly to any and all questions posed; you don't have to address every issue, only those on which you have an opinion. The aim of this post is to gauge potential interest in this community, and to get some feedback on what would make writers and reviewers want to post here.

To start us off: What are you general opinions on the comm? Is it destined for failure, or just crazy enough to work?

Complete these sentences:
  • This comm could work if ______.
  • It's all going to end in crushing failure if ________.
  • I am excited about this idea because _________.
  • I am skeptical about this idea because ________.

Other issues I'd like opinions on:
  • The way things are set at the moment: membership is closed; users may choose to watch or friend the comm. Anyone may post, but new posts are screened pending approval by yours truly. Anonymous commenting is turned on, IP logging and comment screening are turned off. Any thoughts about these settings?

  • How should I handle authors who wish to post their stories anonymously? Would you prefer to PM or email your story? Make a post screened for "members only" (I'm the only member) which I then copy and post as a regular entry? Something else?

  • Should the comm be open only to certain fandoms, or to anyone wishing to post? What about allowing original fiction?

  • Should Adult/NC-17/sexually explicit fic be allowed (and the comm changed to adults only?) or should stories be limited to an R rating?

  • What rules would you propose for the comm?

If I missed anything or you have another opinion to offer, do speak up. Or just say 'Hi'. You know, whatever! I look forward to hearing from you.

Anonymous commenting is on, IP logging and comment screening are turned off; feel free to offer your honest opinions. (And practice your constructive criticizing style!) Anonymity is optional; you may post logged-in if you prefer. Usual rules of internet decorum (no flaming, be constructive) apply.
