The big event

Mmmm... Evil Duncan is on TNT right now....

Went to see Fahrenheit 9/11 last night. There were several times during the movie, when the lies and manipulations were exposed, when we saw the suffering of the Iraqis and the young Americans -- I felt physically sick. And very, very sad. It was smart for Moore to keep himself off camera. The few times we heard him voice sympathetic comments to interviewees seemed more to agitate them than just elicit responses. His theory on Afghanistan might not be dead on, but he's at his glorious best when talking about Iraq, the Iraqi people, the soldiers and their families. And the portion on the Florida controversy is convincing. Bush should have never won that state.

I sometimes like to imagine what it would've been like if things had been done differently, if, instead of lashing out at whomever we could find, we Americans had instead reflected on our own culpability. Obviously, no single American is the bad guy or bears the blame, but collectively we've been responsible for a lot of suffering. We've done evil things to various peoples for hundreds of years -- why pay now, and why with such force?
