Writer's Block: On Character Preferences

Jul 27, 2008 20:17

okay, usually i'm not one for answer these thingies, but this one stuck out like a sore thumb to me as i casually scrolled through past questions in an attempt to make it look like i'm not yearning for a'postin'.

it's really not a huge secret who my favorite fictional character is; i think that anyone that's known me for at least a week is bound to guess this one pretty damned quickly. in all of literature, the one character that keeps coming back to haunt and confuse and dazzle me is Severus Snape from the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling.

obviously, me telling you whose brilliant mind he sprang forth from really ain't too necessary. if you don't know that Snape is all at once greasy Potions Master, once-Death Eater, and full time fuck buddy of one Harry James Potter, then you're either one of those evangelical crazy people, not reading the books thoroughly enough...or you just don't read as much fanfiction as i do.

consistently mean, harsh-tempered and a snarky, sexy bastard, Snape is all at once antagonist and protagonist. i know a lot of people ("mother, snape ended up being good, so would you just get off his fucking back about the whole never-letting-go-of-unfair-grudges-thing, already?!") debate that Snape was ever really a protagonist in the series and you know what, i'm not gonna argue with you ("except you, mom!"). Snape was a fucking asshole. and he didn't try to be anything that he wasn't. he hated Harry for all the wrong reasons, and blamed him repeatedly for the mistakes of James. but you know what - these things are just some of those that make up one of the most heavily characterized fictional characters in the history of literature.

now, it may seem that i'm slightly biased seeing as i would very much like to jump Snape's bones, but the fact is simple: when JK Rowling was writing the complexity and darkness that is Severus Snape, she seriously knew what the fuck she was doing.

WORD.

now, for my least favorite character, it seems only fitting that i pick someone from the same series as my beloved Potions Maater. therefore, i pick a character that has many a time been the object of my disdain and Snapish sneer - Ginny Weasly.

man, does this girl drive me crazy! if JK Rowling was a genius in writing Snape, methinks she perhaps blew one too many braincells over his intensity and just had to let Ginny settle for the mediocre leftovers. i can hardly watch the movies, because the actress that portrays her drives me even crazier. i seriously am not trying to be a bitch here, but FUCKING A - i don't think they could have gotten an uglier actress from a leper colony.

Ginny is an obnoxious, prissy little fangirl. there is no kinder way to put it. if fanficwriterkind was to search the planet for the ultimate mary sue, they would not have to look much farther than the youngest member of the Weasley family. jesus christ, Ginny Weasley is like a nightmare come to sickening, befreckled, be...redheaded life.

i'd expand upon the subject, but it might actually make me think more on her than absolutely necessary.

so, in conclusion, Severus Snape is a Sex God and quite possibly the most realistic fiction ever written, and Ginny Weasley is an annoying whore.

any questions?
