we are swimming in a simple rhythm.....

Dirty Projectors and Bjork borrowing Stockhausen?!?!? okay, now you've got my attention.

Mount Wittenberg Orca is amazing. no question. it's incredibly well produced. it's smooth. the tonality is beautiful. the sounds have weight. have meaning. every sound is with intention. sounds feel rich; creamy; close; intimate. others feel light and breezy. and they sound beautiful. the harmonies feel seamless and give me that flutter in my chest that i get from hearing voices so perfectly matched and beautiful my body can't help but have a physical reaction.
and yet, at the same time... it can be a hard album to crack. It's not immediately inviting ( as amazing as it is). this album/ this performance is one to grapple with. to interact with. to allow yourself to get absorbed in to really appreciate.
I put it on in my room, while cleaning. I was happily putting things away and hearing all of these new beautiful sounds, but i just couldn't get my mind off other things. what I'd done that day, crap about work, how i was going to spend my time; you know, things. and then all of a sudden, 'Beautiful Mother' comes on. and it forces me to stop, stand up. it makes me pay attention. and then it slaps me right across the face...... and i fall in love. i can't tell you how far in, i was too entranced in excitement to think to check - it couldn't have been more than a minute in, if that- , but at some point i hear a solid, unmistakable reference to an early Stochkausen piece i had fallen in love with in third year during my Modern Music class. The piece has since been lost in one of my many hard drive crashes, and i had all but forgotten about it. For the life of me i still can't remember it's name, but there is was. and i couldn't help but shriek in excitement and jump up and down.
and damn it, i paid attention to the rest of that album.
and i love it. in a huge huge way.
this album is well worth every cent. beautiful, interesting, dynamic, incredible.
I highly recommend it.
so listen. like, now.
