Computer Thoughts; and others, too

I spent Thursday morning taking advantage of Barker and MIT net to provide myself with a slew of journal articles about extracting data fields from html or general text. The idea is that you have a bunch of pages that were generated from a template and a database, and want to reconstruct the database without access to the template. This is of ( Read more... )

if it's useful to you: i'd have to think about how i feel about being a guinea pig novice. it probably depends on free time and demands that work and school make on my computer. it probably also depends on me getting over my stupid pride and asking you questions..as well as us having spare time and being in the same place at the same time. (this weirds me because i'm used to learning alone and not letting people watch my learning curve. i think that's my basic guinea pig problem.) but if you want someone who is on the novice side of the entry barriers, stuff next year seems to make me convenient, and figuring linux out is something i've been both thinking about and putting off for a while.

Deal. Thanks. Though for my purposes, you can leave me notes saying, "I've been having trouble with $this, but I just fixed it."

i'd been considering offering the same thing, but i'm probably a less convenient and useful test subject.
*is amused, nevertheless*

[grin] Because clearly I never see you. The only obvious sense in which you are less useful is that you have many other sources of information, some better than I. But I already pointed out that coming to me for help is not really the key feature. Arguably I need someone here who has less *nix experience than either of you, or Benj or Desh...heh. I guess I actually had less exposure than any of you, when I started. "overambitious" There's always the "more people should use *nix" project, but you knew that.

um, i have literally no experience. really. i also have no spare machine that i can put to use right now (this could possibly be remedied, but), but had plans for the summer of poking at the 4th ware cruftmachine out in the lounge; not sure whether i was heading for becoming useful at athena or linux, probably a bit of both.

you could argue that i have a decent conceptual basis for such things, of course. but i have documented problems transitioning between conceptual knowledge and practical skillz. so, *shrug*

Sounds good. I also have a box (and a half?) in search of a home and an install.
