I've been wondering that too. I mean, I almost feel like he can't in a way. Before he presented himself as a crazy, quirky, freakishly silly, ADD guy who had a teasingly-conservative edge about his body and sexuality, and basically anything naughty :P It made for amazing TV when things would go wrong or guests would kilter into the "going-over-the-FCC-standards-line" zone and he'd adlib his uncomfortableness (not that he actually was, but it was part of the charm).
Now, Conan is a rebel in a bluedress. After his exit from NBC and TTS, he's managed to pretty much lay himself completely out there to the public and the crazy fandom that is us. He held nothing back and completely went for it to the point where he'd get naked on stage and kiss people in the audience (damnit I wish I was one of them :P).
So now what? Can he still be that same guy on TV? I'm not so sure, how can he dial everything back once again after shredding the restrictions for the last 6 months? And what about our reaction? Will we still get excited when Conan has a slip of the tongue and lets out a swear word every now and then? Or, will going back to the old format be such a tease that we'll salivate at the idea of his rock-and-roll style to burst out?
In the end, though, I don't even know if Conan could go back to his old ways even if he wanted to. He said in several of those interviews (google, twitter, SF Sketchfest) that things are going to have to be different just because of what's happened. Remember: he was going one direction, but got caught off guard and was somehow directed in the other path of being liberated and in conjunction with his audience. He's not going to fight it :) So I guess we'll just have to stay tuned and see what happens (like that actually needed to be stated, sorry for that :P). November, where art thou?
That's true, he did break through restrictions. But that Irish Catholic sexual repression is part of who he is. I believe it wasn't all entirely an act and that some of it will still show through, intentionally or not. Also, if he shaves his beard and they put him back in his late night uniform--the suit and tie--he'll have a different persona than when he's bearded and wearing a leather purple suit.
But I agree. Things will be different. I'm just really nervous to find out how, because I love my innocent and geeky Conan. He totally shed that part of himself this summer. That was no coiffed dork on up on stage--that was a different person with a guitar and a six pack.
And if you look at early Late Night episodes when Conan's head was kind of chubby and he and Andy had that nervous energy, he was a different character then before he evolved into the lanky, straight-laced guy we know.
Whatever he shows us in November, I'm certain he'll make it work.
I agree. I remember thinking at one of the shows that it seems like a part of him kind of went crazy, in a good way though lol.
A friend of mine was just talking to me about how he thinks his show might end up not being the same and not work or something...But after seeing what they did on tour and the interviews he's done, I have a HUGE amount of faith in the new show no matter what. I think we'll see parts of his old TV personality come back mixed with the new.
Lol well, he does, he's a long time fan it's more like he doesn't really know anything about what's happened since he lost the tonight show so I convinced him it will be good lol.
Me too, the Irish Catholic repression is such a vital part of his comedy! And I agree that it wasn't an act, what I meant by the uncomfortableness was when celebs would swear and he'd get nervous, I don't think he has issues with language in general (he has a delightfully filthy mouth :) ), but because it was network he'd try and distance himself from the salaciousness, haha. In terms of other things, however, he definitely does have a level of uneasiness *cough* sex machine *cough* :P
