Roger Waters: ‘We don’t need no Falkland Islands’
Published: 2 March, 2012, 14:11On the eve of a gig in Argentina, Pink Floyd bassist and vocalist Roger Waters has blasted Britain’s policy on the Falkland Islands. The star believes that the archipelago should be considered Argentine.
Waters made his strongly worded statement in an interview to Chilean television. Next week, the musician is due to perform in Buenos Aires, with all shows long sold out.
British media exploded after the Chilean journalist posted extracts from the interview on his Twitter feed on Tuesday.
Clearly not wishing to be “just another brick in the wall,” Waters laid into Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron, saying “there's nothing they like more than to toe the line in the Houses of Parliament and stand there with hand on hip, saying the Falkland Islands are British and they always will be and the Falklands islanders' wishes are paramount and as long as they want to be British… Bulls**t!" the Guardian quotes Waters as saying.
The rock star declared he’s “ashamed” of his country’s Falklands policy, as well as of Great Britain’s colonial past.
"I take no pride in the fact that 150 years or so, the sun never set on the British empire, and that we were out raping and plundering and stealing as much we could from everybody all over the world… That kind of imperialism is not something that as an Englishman I'm proud of," he stated.
Needless to say, Waters made it to top mentions and trends in Argentine social networks after the interview went public on Twitter and was aired on local television.
Argentina claims the Falkland Islands as it had an initial settlement there, yet Britain occupied the territory in the 19th century. The countries clashed in an undeclared war in 1982. Argentina still lays claim to the lands, which it refers to as The Malvinas.
