The fines for not having insurance are waived under several circumstances, for instance they're waived for anyone whose income falls below the threshold for taxation. The bill's not great, but it's not stupid. And of course people's healthcare costs are going to go up, the whole point of reform was to keep that trend from spiraling far out of control while the country continues to grow. If people are universally too dumb to grasp the difference between small increases in cost and catastrophic increases then any efforts to reform anything that costs anything in this country are doomed. I'd rather find out if people are that stupid, rather than just assume that they are and forever accede the governing philosophy of the nation to Barry Goldwater's corpse by default

Meanwhile I know at least one person who was functionally unable to purchase insurance because of a pre-existing health condition who is now going to be able to purchase insurance for the first time ever. Not that she'll need to just yet, because she's now going to be covered by her parent's work plan until she's 26 just like everyone else.

Moral: Cheer the fuck up a tad, yes?
