So, I managed to round up a couple of people from work and finally got around to seeing
The Lion King while it was in the local cinemas. Personally, this is one of my favourite movies when I was growing up (I was about 8 at the time it came out) and I think it's survived the test of time in reasonably good form. It's been called Hamlet with Lions and also called a cheap rip off of Kimba, but I still have fond memories even after nearly two decades.
I think the best thing about re-watching it on the big screen is getting to see the fine detail of the animation and scenes. With the last decades obsession with 3D animation, good traditional cel animated features have been few and far between (excusing the entire Anime genre of course). I was also slightly hesitant about seeing the 3D version, but was pleasantly surprised with the effect. There's one or two scenes where it really shines - and it an animated film it seems to be much easier to do than for a live action.
About my only gripe was the audio. Either the cinema had the audio down about 1/2 of what I would have liked or there was no surround track. I can't honestly remember whether the original run of the film was a Dolby Digital 5.1 thing, but it's not quite as fun when the musical numbers sound like a TV turned down so the adults can still have their conversation over the coffee.
Overall - glad that I did it. Hopefully that should keep any Disney tendencies under control for another few years, or at least until they re-release something like Aladin.
*hums all the way to work*
