So I finally buckled down and got a track of me playing out there for distribution. The solo piano version of Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is something I’ve been plucking away at and developing for some years now. It has pretty much settled into a specific arrangement that I always do with maybe only some slight variations depending on my mood. And since it is one of the most polished pieces in my repertoire, I decided it was a good choice to get things rolling.
It’s been a very fun and rewarding process to get it out there. Since it isn’t an original, it involved getting mechanical licensing, but that was really a very easy and painless process via Harry Fox Agency. Exactly how much of the per-download license fee ends up going to Anthony Newley’s estate and to Leslie Bricusse (who, at 80, is getting up there!), I have no idea.
I used cdbaby.com for releasing the track, and they got it out there to all major online distribution outlets including iTunes, Amazon MP3, and Napster. I haven’t had a chance to look at some of the other places where it is supposed to be available (Rhapsody, eMusic, Spotify, MySpace Music, Liquid Digital, Verizon V-Cast, Zune, etc.). If anybody else finds it out there, then feel free to comment and let me know. I find it rather amusing that people can download it as a ringtone, but that seems to be one possibility out there…
So if you factor all the costs in, I think I’ll end up with about 61 cents per download at cdbaby, and probably much closer to 50 cents per download for any of the other places. I’ve also ordered some download cards that I can sell (or give out for shameless self promotion). If I sell the cards for $1, then with them I think I’ll end up with something like 27 cents since they cost a bit to order. Obviously, I won’t be retiring in luxury anytime soon, but it’ll be nifty to see this happening and hopefully grow and develop as I get more stuff out there.
I’ve already started working on the next release. This time it is an original piece so I don’t have to worry about the licensing. I’m sure I’ll be spamming everyone when I’m done with that one, too.
The best way to link to where you can download the track is by going to my new
Get Music page…. It’s got nifty little logos and everything!
