Poem: Distance is Measured in Moments

distance is measured in moments
by Dementis

distance for us is not a measurement
in feet, in metres, in miles,
but a measurement in
moments.

the moment my hand outstretched to yours
and pressed into your dainty fingers
a single, seemingly lonely
marigold;

petals pretty, picture perfect.

the moment i first pulled you into a kiss
and you stood stock-still and silent
until your lips
remembered how to react.

the moment your heart pulsed in my hands,
and mine in yours -
shared like hot beverages
on a cold winter’s midnight.

the moment you held too tight
and so my heart shattered into shards in your hands;
the moment i placed a burning match
to yours,
and laughed out of spite.

and now, right now and right here,
dressed in too-tight neckties
and leather shoes -
and i, trying to recall the shape of your mouth
as it slopes against my own.

funny how distance, for us,
is measured in moments...
and the two of us have never once
been so close in touching

yet felt so far apart.
