You hear a faint sound of steps, not too distanced from the place you hide. A noise. Voices. There's someone... something monstrous, crying out. And there are seagulls.
You never heard seagulls in Hod before.
Your breath is hard and you almost choke on the tears of fear, welling up inside you. A hand touches your hair and draws you nearer, gently. It held you. You try to calm. Breathing in, breathing out. Not crying.
Fear hides in the shadow behind you, ready to strike.
"Don't look!", someone breathed, and you keep your eyes shut, tightly. Nothing is there. You pretent to see nothing, hear nothing, feel nothing. Not the steps, not the the voices. And not the liquid, pouring down your body like water.
Fear growls again, and you try to hide under the hand now cupping your cheek.
"It's okay.", a ragged voice whispers, and finally you do what you know you shouldn't - you open your eyes, seeing the pale orbs of your sister, flickering in exhaustion, and you realise all the pale, lifeless corpes, and that all the blood --
"Don't look!", she says again, and you shut your eyes and start to cry soundlessly. Her hand leaves your face. You hear a soft thumb as it meets the ground.
The voices vanish. The steps, too.
And her voice. Her breath would never touch your skin again.
You are alone. Alone and hidden. Hidden behind a wall of dead bodies.
And the world around you turns black.
