So I took the girl to the NASCAR race in Fontana today. For those that know me well, it's definitely a "tell" that I would do such a thing, and its also a known fact that I'm a NASCAR junky and I make it a goal to 'teach' people that there is WAY more to this sport than turnning left.
So get this : She fucking loved it. I mean Really (with capital 'R' and everything) loved it. Afterwards I asked her for her thoughts, based on todays performances, of who we would see be truly competitive, and she said it like it was. Mark Martin, Jimmy Johnson, and Tony Stewart were the ones she chose, despite the fact that I'm a Dale Jr. fan. After confronting (nudgingly, of course) her on that, she basically stated that as a newcomer to the sport with no background or loyalties, she basically thought of Jr. as overrated and wants him to prove his worth. While I only partially agree with her, she has a point. Jr. is an excellent race car driver but has shown weaknesses in team work, pit strategy, and a general dislike for changing his 'proven' race line. His temperament, candor, and pedigree are really the only things hold him to the tarmac. I tend to agree that she's right, though I'll still cheer for him every time, along with my other favorites.
Jimmy Johnson is a certain choice for her pick as he's from San Diego. Not to mention that he's cool, smiles a lot, cute (or so I've been told) and drives fast. For a split second one would think that she was describing me. The man in the mirror agrees. Even though both of our cars are blue, I am lacking a bright yellow number 48, a pimped out helmet, and a team of highly trained pit crew. Oh well, one can only dream.
Mark Martin she picked out because I was disappointed that he took 2nd place in Daytona this year. I still tend to believe that she honestly "gets" him. Time will tell.
I guess my whole point is that the three drivers that she picked are seriously excellent picks. Yes, they're kind of gimmes. But they're still good picks. And she is also showing signs of serious NASCAR fandom, which I will enjoy even though everyone else will stand and laugh at.
4 1/2 months and counting, and I'm absolutely in love.
