Four Times Bruno Walton Failed to Win Boots’ Heart and One Time He Didn’t by
scintilla10Bruno/Boots | PG-13 | humor/romance
summary: What it says on the tin.
thoughts: I love future fics where the cast is in university, and this satisfies that craving well without even having to make everyone end up in the same school. Bruno is, as ever, Bruno - always plotting and planning and founding committees. I love him and his obliviousness; I love the email responses from old schoolmates (particularly Pete's); I love the newly-recrutied fans of the swimming team (lol). And I love the ending. Because, of course. ♥
STAR TREK 2009
#boringshoreleave by anonymous
Kirk/Spock/McCoy, Uhura/Scotty, Sulu/Chekov | PG-13 | humor, crack
summary: So, it's shore leave time and Kirk, Chekov, Bones, Scotty, and Sulu all go their respective ways to do whatever they do on leave. They all have PDAs/Blackberries/Cell Phones/ect. and randomly end up on a chat room one night. Hilarity ensues.
thoughts: Many great things exist about this fic, particularly Scotty and Chekov's geek talk, Uhura and Scotty flirting, Spock and Kirk and McCoy's timely absences, and McCoy's epic goof-up at the end (LOL). But, really, the highlight of this fic for me is Sulu and Chekov being absolutely retarded and adorable at each other, and Chekov continually "jumping on Mr Sulu's stomach". alskdhf you'll have to see that in context to understand but it is amazing. Also, screennames. :D
5 times a member of the crew did something to show off Kirk's genius to the rest of Star Fleet and 1 time they didn't have to by anonymous
very minor Kirk/Spock | PG | awesome
summary: What it says on the tin.
thoughts: Smart!Kirk! I love smart!Kirk alskdhg. And this is just basically awesome because it is all about smart!Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise being defensive and proud of their captain. Love all around.
5 Times Chekov Got Bad Dating Advice and 1 Time He Didn't by anonymous
Sulu/Chekov | PG | humor
summary: The bridge crew keep giving Chekov dating advice. And he just keeps taking it.
thoughts: Ahhhh I am such a sucker for cute Sulu/Chekov fics and this one is no exception. McCoy's advice is so terrible, and Scotty's advice is so appropriate of him. I love that Kirk's advice is actually the best out of all of them - except, of course, for Sulu's. :3
Bad Things With You by anonymous
Kirk/Spock | NC-17 | smut
summary: Kirk wants into Spock's pants but figures his usual approach won't work. So, knowing about Vulcan touch telepathy, he starts touching Spock (like on the shoulder or arm, etc.) at random, seemingly innocent moments and pushing all these mental images at him - fantasies of them together, pictures of Kirk naked, etc. Lather rinse and repeat until finally Spock can't stand it anymore and just drags him off the bridge to his room for hot sex.
thoughts: Yeah, so. This prompt fill was smoking hot. Short but no complaints. The power of fantasy sometimes does way more than a five-page long sex scene, unf.
Brilliance, or The Necessity of Precision by
naynymicKirk/Spock | PG-13 | romance, some humor, some angst
summary: Spock (and the rest of the crew) think he's involved with kirk. Spock eats with him, does the vulcan kiss, extends other touches (just stuff that is REALLY obvious but Kirk thinks spock is just being friendly). Cue huge misunderstanding when Kirk says he's single.
thoughts: The author took this prompt and did an incredible job with it. It was a cute premise - funny and light-hearted, but she gave it so much depth. ♥ It was heartwarming to see Spock opening himself up to Kirk and pouring his heart into this relationship, and how everyone accepted them and congratulated them. It was funny at first to see Kirk so oblivious, and then heartrending when he flirts casually, never knowing how much he's hurting Spock. But, yay, ending. ;~; I love K/S. A particularly nice touch was how the author wove in words (e.g., "brilliant") and their definitions.
Chafed by
janice_lesterKirk/everyone, Kirk/Spock | NC-17 | aliens made them do it
summary: Jim is drugged by some alien race as some sort of 'thanks' for whatever he did to help them. What the drug does is make him only able to achieve orgasm with his 'soulmate'.
thoughts: There is not much to say about this fic except :D. There are a number of funny bits to go with the sex. And K/S always induces :D. Hee, especially the way Spock goes about it, because he doesn't know about the soulmate requirement and thinks Kirk is just incompetent at getting himself off. /rolls
Coddling by anonymous
Sulu/Chekov | PG | fluff
summary: Chekov didn't get much love as a kid, and the few relationships he's had have been cold and unsatisfying, so he finds Sulu's warmth and affection kind of awkward and weird and needs to be eased into being treated right.
thoughts: Sulu is just so alskdhfd-inducing in this, so sheepish and smitten and it is adorable to see, even though Chekov doesn't Get It. I could totally buy Chekov being annoyed because he is tired of feeling patronized and coddled for being young and cute, but Sulu just kind of steals this one. This makes me so happy. :D :D :D
Collapsed Kirk by anonymous
Kirk/Spock | PG-13 | some hurt/comfort
summary: Jim basically collapses on the bridge after the events of Reboot and gets hauled to sickbay where Bones and Spock catalog his injuries. They are massively horrified and dismayed and cannot figure out how he was still moving around let alone running around alien ships evading Romulans. Starfleet thinks he's conning them with the injury report and trying to get away from punishment.
thoughts: Great, great fic. Not hardcore h/c, which is not my thing, but very well done. In particular, I love how protective the crew is of their captain, how much they get "OH YOU DID NOT JUST--" at Starfleet, hackles up, in defense of Kirk. ♥ Lovely characterizations all around and just really, really nice to see the aftermath of Nero scene, before they get back to Earth as celebrated heroes.
Five things Pavel Chekov claimed were inwented in Russia (but weren't) and one thing that was (but Chekov never knew) by
sorcha_rminor Sulu/Chekov | PG | humor
summary: What it says on the tin.
thoughts: Hahaha I love the 5 +1 format, I cannot lie. Chekov is adorable as always, Kirk is so sweet with his one line, McCoy's defense of Georgia is awesome, and #1 made me spittake laughing.
Five Times Pavel A. Chekov Was A Sewenteen-Year-Old Kid, and One Time He Wasn't by
jazzoniaSulu/Chekov | PG-13 | awesome
summary: What it says on the tin.
thoughts: These range from cute to poignant, from the silly things a seventeen-year-old would do to the more painful, consequence-bearing things Chekov personally has experienced. It's really a great selection in the first five and I love them all, the way they make my heart flutter a little. Thankfully, there's a happy, cute +1 to end on a yay note. They are so precious.
Four Love Notes Sulu Recieved and Ignored, and the One He Was Waiting to Answer by
prehistoric_seaKirk/Sulu | PG | humor, romance
summary: What it says on the tin.
thoughts: While my biased Sulu/Chekov and K/S shipper goes a little D:, this is really all around so cute and funny. From Uhura and Spock's notes, hahaha, to poor Chekov's (he is so earnest and I love anyone who can write his voice without relying on writing-out accents), and how incredibly endearing and shuffling-feet-awkward Kirk's is... Awesome stuff.
I Wanna Hold Your Hand by
proudcockatriceKirk/Spock | PG | humor
summary: Spock has a crush on someone but he quickly realizes that Vulcan Seduction Techniques (TM) will not work on a human male, therefore, he decides to seduce that person using Earth techniques. The thing is, he's still a Vulcan, therefore his "seduction" is so subtle, that absolutely no one, including the seducee, notices. For other Vulcans, however, it looks like Spock is draping himself all over the guy while crying hysterically I LOVE YOU!
thoughts: This is just as hilarious and cute as the prompt makes it sound. I particularly like Sarek going up to Kirk to apologize for his son's rude behavior and Kirk going "bwuh?" alsdkgh I don't think I'll ever get tired of the Vulcan kiss trope.
In Which the Enterprise Crew Plays I've Never by
twisting_vine-xKirk/Spock, others | NC-17 overall | humor
summary: "Damnit, Spock, we're your friends, not some human laboratory specimens!"
thoughts: Spock wants to make friends (this starts off making me >: but it gets better!) so he joins the crew playing "I Never". There is much hilarity. There are hints of every pairing under the sun. There is drunk!Spock. And, in the end, there is glorious, glorious K/S, but...later, because Kirk doesn't take advantage (which is another thing I love).
Laundry by
rubynyeSulu/Chekov, some Kirk/McCoy | PG | humor
summary: Kirk points out "Ensign" Sulu is wearing the wrong shirt. And "Lieutenant" Chekov should probably get his re-tailored, they seem a bit loose in the shoulders and short in the sleeve.
thoughts: Very cute idea and executed well too. I give up trying to resist the cute that is Sulu/Chekov. Also, I love that Kirk is shameless, because he would be.
Open Hostilities by
echoinautumnSulu/Chekov | NC-17 | smut
summary: Love and hate straddle a very fine line.
thoughts: For a change of pace, Sulu and Chekov start of antagonistic to each other - but in a very plausible manner that doesn't feel contrived. I could see Sulu reacting like this, to Chekov's genius, taking things the wrong way and not automatically falling in love. The author does a great job telling things the way Sulu sees them, and how he is stopped short by the revelation that Chekov doesn't hate him too. And the falling into bed is a little fast but, hey, it's hot smut. :3 No complaints from this corner. (It was for the kink meme, after all.)
Sexy Roleplaying by
tallycolaSulu/Chekov, Kirk/Spock | NC-17 | smut, humor
summary: Sulu and Chekov doing impressions of the other crew members. In a sexy roleplaying sense or just to be juvenile dicks.
thoughts: Has smut ever been so hilarious? It is hard to say. This manages to be both hilarious (oh Chekov) and very, very hot. Sulu and Chekov roleplay K/S in bed and, ugh, all the little details of body language in addition to the way they speak? Fantastic. And Chekov alsdkghsd. Topping. I love this like burning and laughed so hard. Could totally hear their voices in my head, and it was great.
Shut Up by
emiimeSulu/Chekov | NC-17 | smut
summary: Hikaru can't shut up during sex. Pavel fixes that.
thoughts: Top!Chekov is hot, yo. Particularly when he is kept IC and I can continue hearing his voice in my head - the author really gets his voice spot on, in my opinion, not turning him into a stereotypical "seme"-type. He is still himself and Sulu is still himself, only begging and shameless, and it is hot. Ughhh I love Chekov. >:
Sulu has friended you on Spacebook! by
imamandajuliusSulu/Chekov | PG | humor
summary: Sulu is getting offended and, ok he admits it, kinda sad and mopey that Chekov has not friended him back on Spacebook. Especially since Pavel has pretty much everyone else friended, including Cupcake for fucks sake!
thoughts: Loling, loling. I love it when Facebook makes its way into fic in appropriately hilarious ways. This is an appropriately hilarious way. Ending is priceless.
That's the Chocolate Talking by anonymous
Kirk/Spock | R | humor, fluff
summary: Sober Kirk dealing with an intoxicated Spock (it's the first time he's been drunk). Spock displays usual drunk shenanigans like slurring, leaps in conversation, drunken conversations, stumbling, etc.
thoughts: Adorable. >: Really, just adorable all around, in all the ways that Spock can be adorable. I love the setting (Prohibition Era-like bars!), the stranger hitting on Spock, Kirk all >:|-faced, and eeee, Spock hitting on Kirk. Heh. Also, continual props to Kirk-not-taking-advantage. ♥

Untitled by
schweinstySulu/Chekov | PG | romance, not-quite-fluff
summary: Chekov sleep walks. Oddly enough, he always ends up in Sulu's room. Eventually, Sulu decides to just keep him there.
thoughts: It's borderline fluff but never descends into too sugary sweet. It's a quieter sense of "aww" though, sparking warm feelings and all that. I think I am just a sap for this pairing, really. The realistically awkward cuddles were so cute.
Untitled by anonymous
Kirk/Spock | PG-13 | teacher!AU, romance
summary: Kirk and Spock are teachers. Kirk pounding away at Spock's impenetrable attitude with his intelligence, persistence, and love of chess.
thoughts: And chess again appears to be the lowest common denominator. Ahhh it is glorious and fun and makes me think of Dead Poets Society and History Boys all at once, which means I love it unconditionally, of course. Chess club! Kirk being, unexpectedly, the English teacher! Kirk's hands-on, creative methods of teaching! Chekov as the genius student! I love it all, particularly how Spock is turned on by long words. Heh.
What? by anonymous
Sulu/Chekov | R | humor
summary: Four times Chekhov/Sulu were lost in translation, one time they weren't.
thoughts: Funny and cute - this is how I like my Sulu/Chekov and alskdhfd this totally satisfies that need. #1 and #3 had me literally laughing out loud - there is no way to not love them. #5 is just the perfect sweet ending needed. ♥
When The Enterprise Had Kittens by
tkpno pairing | PG | fluff
summary: Kittens aboard the Enterprise.
thoughts: Serious fic, but still adorable. I particularly like Chekov not really loving cats and not liking the insinuation that he should. I love Scotty and Engineering being cat Mecca. :D There are also subtle aching undertones of McCoy -> Kirk -> Spock -> Uhura, which are lovely lovely lovely and sad, but still amazingly written.
You Can't Take It With You by
flit_st_fanficsome Kirk/McCoy | PG | gen
summary: The one thing each of the crew would take with them if they had to evacuate the Enterprise.
thoughts: Sulu's made me cry and Spock's made me hurt so much for him. Each one listed is actually really thoughtful and poignant, and the author gives a lot of meaning into each object selected. The kicker is, of course, the ending. All are wonderful though. A lot is put into so few words.
Bonus:
Adorable art, which was a really cute take on the prompt. Ignore the wank in the comments because the OP took offense instead of realizing the art was not meant to mock her original prompt. The art is so worth it though: alksdhg adorable.
SUPER JUNIOR
12 Months in a Year (Not 13) by
tamryneradaniKibum/Donghae | PG | angst, romance
summary: Kibum catches up with Super Junior updates and ends up missing someone more than ever.
thoughts: The thing about this is that other than the established KiHae, everything seems so plausible. It's so likely that Kibum would catch up on Super Junior updates and wonder if he's even still part of the group, if they still miss him. It seems so likely he'd have doubts and insecurities, because he does love them. This line really stuck out for me:
He hates being separated from them and it’s frustrating because he’s finally doing what he wants, finally getting a chance to act, and increasingly finding out that maybe it’s what he wanted before but it’s not what he wants now.
Ouch. My heart. And then she moves on to bring up Donghae, and the way she writes them so meant to be breaks my heart. I know that they aren't nearly as meant-to-be as she potrays them, but my heart wavers for KiHae and makes exceptions because I love them. The ending is what's great, because it's not necessarily the fact that "omg KiHae is OTP" that makes it work, it's the fact that Donghae, as someone who cares about Kibum, knows when he's hurting and knows when he needs to talk. I really loved that. (And the different "I'm fine"s. Oh, this is me wibbling.)
but for two moments by
catskiltKibum/Donghae | PG-13 | angst, romance
summary: Donghae pays Kibum a visit after four years.
thoughts: There are a lot of KiHae fics where Kibum doesn't ever say a word and the chance passes him by, and he watches Donghae being happy in the future, and regrets it. This is another one of those fics... But it is so much more than just another cliché (or I am just that much of a sucker for each and every one). Kibum's emotions are painfully, beautifully realistic - understandable and heartbreaking for that. I can see it happening, how he'd draw into himself, make up excuses to avoid seeing the others because he's just too tired. And how the consequences of that will come back with Donghae walking into his life and Kibum realizing that Donghae has moved on. Whatever chance they might once have had, Kibum extinguished. So bittersweet, but still so good. Sometimes, we just don't get what we want in life. Sometimes, there are no "happy" endings. ;__;
I like your face by
wobaozhewoKangin/Ryeowook | PG | humor
summary: Fanservice is not Kangin’s forte. Apparently.
thoughts: Hilarious. Kangin is stubborn in his awesomeness and unable to believe that he is anything except "natural" at fanservice. Ryeowook provides a great foil. Brief mentions of KangTeuk make me happy, everyone is funny, and the ending is A+. Way to go, Kangin!
Because Kangin was very subtle. He was the master of subtle. He was subtle AWESOME. Or just really loud, can’t-hear-you-over-my-awesome awesome. … Is that what subtle meant?
Untitled by
quixotic_notesKyuhyun/Zhou Mi | R | angst
summary: He hunched his shoulders and sighed, reaching out for the dark blue jeans that flattered his endless legs instead.
thoughts: Not quite sure how to describe this except that it's a huge change from the usual Qmi-is-fluffy-and-meant-to-be strain of fic. And it's lovely. It leaves an impact - a sort of disquiet left in your chest. I really like the way Zhou Mi's gender issues are portrayed here and how, in the end, it doesn't seem to be enough. Fascinating.
Without You I Might Get Lost by
katsimotoKyuhyun/Zhou Mi | G | pre-slash, fluff
summary: “You know, you can put them to the laundry basket,” Zhou Mi said, picking up the remote control and changing the channel.
“Yeah,” Kyuhyun mumbled against his chest. His breath was warm through the fabric of the shirt and it sent shivers down Zhou Mi’s spine.
thoughts: The font is a little wonky in this post, which is unfortunate, but it's not terribly distracting because it's all still readable. This isn't the best stylistic piece I've ever read but man does it get to me on a fundamental level. The author really sets the mood and the atmosphere of the fic, really captures the emotions between Kyuhyun and Zhou Mi (so domestic, so easy), and it really tugs on my heartstrings. This is what reading comes down to me: finding something that I connect with, on some level. Oh QMi. One day...
SUPERNATURAL
Not Time's Fool by
pandarusSam/Dean, Dean/OCs | NC-17 | genderswitch, humor, drama
summary: A story in 21 parts, featuring an Ancient Greek curse, an unexpected metamorphosis, adventures in pool sharking, numerous shots of tequila, a nun outfit, zombies, angels, demons, kidnappings, startling discoveries about old acquaintances, massage, a game of strip poker, girl-on-girl action, girl-on-boy action, and boy-on-boy action.
thoughts: I found this through
fanficrants. :D Because someone was complaining about genderswitch fics done wrong and this was linked as one done right - and it was indeed done very right! So long and plotty and a lot of fun to read even for me, who hasn't seen past Supernatural season 2. I knew the big spoilers though... Everyone is kept really in character which is the highlight of the fic, and the author takes her delicious time going about making the Sam/Dean happen, which is really nice because I've read a lot of one-shot fics where it happens almost immediately. And while that works too, if done well, this is a great change of pace, to have things develop slowly. Good humor too, because Dean is awesome.
