Dearest Father,
How are you? Have you heard from Eddie recently? How is he? I must admit to being a little worried for him. I have recieved only one letter from him since he was evacuated. We receive a little Muggle news here with the Daily Prophet, but I do not know how much they would know.
I am writing to ask specifically of your knowledge of the school. One of the boys in my year, Tom Riddle, has been researching the school. He has discovered a lot of information about the founding of the school; many things which are not written in the first chapters of Hogwarts, A History.
His is particularly interested in Wizarding history and bloodlines. He knew little about the school before he arrived here, as he was raised in Muggle London. There is still much contention, even in what he has found, over the reasons for Slytherin’s leaving the school. I have begun helping him because I am interested in History, and also because Professor Herbert has given us credit in class for the work we have done, even with the texts in the Hogwarts Library.
Do you have any knowledge of the school’s founding that you would be able to send me? I don’t mean knowledge that you have from your work, but simply information that is available in the public archives at the Ministry.
Professor Herbert has told me that I have some skill for History. Tom, too, is doing very well, and Professor Herbert has taken a liking to him. I am doing quite well in Transfiguration with Professor Dumbledore, but I am still behind in Charms with Professor Kegg. Olive is helping me with Charms, and I help her with Transfiguration. Minerva is helping me and Elizabeth very much with Transfiguration.
My worst subjects are still Arithmancy and Astronomy. I find Arithmancy very difficult, although it very interesting. I know Mother was a skilled Arithmancer, and I would like to do well. But I do think that it is difficult for first and second years to study. I hate Astronomy. I am sure that I will pass the subject because Olive is very interested in it. Alphard Black is interested as well, so I want to do well.
I know you would like for me to stay here over the Christmas break. I think that most students will be staying out of London, so it will be very social here during that time. But I will miss you Mother, Eddie, Mrs Hooper’s cooking and Mrs Hopper herself and everyone else during that time. I will be able to ask Minerva to find some gifts in Hogsmeade to send you and for Eddie as well.
Keep well, love
