i've just had an email from richard herring, beloved most obviously by historthecrow of this parrish and a few others. why? because suddenly i noticed he's championing CNPS - or consecutive number plate spotting. my dad has been doing this for years - it's been a highlight of many a holiday in my youth, my dad driving down a yorkshire road and suddenly shouting "225? there was a 226 back in bedale - can we go back? it's only twenty miles out of our way!" and us shouting "NO!" at him repeatedly. it's quite sweet to see the rules laid out as ernestly as herring has done here. i emailed him to congratulate him and tell him he'll make my dad's day. his reply was slightly tongue in cheek as he no doubt thinks i'm some kind of mentalist who pretends to be his dad but i'm not ashamed

i've always had a love hate relationship with lee and herring. for people so obviously brilliant - their contributions to "on the hour" which were either butchered or ripped off when it became "the day today" and the cause for the years of "curmudgeonly faced patrick marber" jokes are incredibly. bits of "fist of fun" still stick with me, especially the book with the wonders of the sit com "there are more things in heaven and earth, than in your philsophy, horatio" where mr and mrs there are more things in heaven and earth that live in the your philosophy horatio inn. and of course "the bent coppers" (one's gay, one has curvature of the spine, both are corrupt and made of copper) as well. those things are marvellous and wonderful and stay with me forever. but other bits were a bit lazy and just seemed to be hours of saying "ah! do you see? do you see?" to each other - which to be fair i still do myself, but you knew how capable they were so another joke about richard herring's julia swalha shrine was unecessary and a bit of a let down

the whole CNPS seems a bit substandard dave gorman to me, but is still rather sweet. so i'm glad to find it, and although he undeniably thinks i'm a mentalist i really did mean it when i told him he'd have made my dad's day. and he's sort of made mine as well. i'll always treasure their radio one shows and the cameos on the armando iannucci radio one programmes. and for making a sunday lunchtime icon out of a fall reference. and much more. so yes, thank you richard herring for that. good luck with your car numbers
