Karkat built his own house

Karkat: Leave your room.

You were allowed to design this hive when you were young, after you emerged victorious from your trials deep in the brooding caverns. You have lived here with your CUSTODIAN ever since.

It's almost as if your people have placed great cultural importance on teaching children to become architecturally adept while very young. It has been this way since ancient times. No one seems to know why that is.

Troll "children" (grubs?) design and build their own hives after emerging from the brooding caverns--this is part of their culture and apparently nobody knows why. The narration calls particular attention to this detail, pointing out that this is a skill that will be useful in Sgrub, which we know the trolls will play, even on our first reading.

I recall that in the B2 universe (that is, the post-scratch version of the kids' universe), the Alpha kids had certain advantages in their world that would help them play Sburb. For example, Jane has a "recipe" fetch modus that shows her how to alchemize any object she captchalogues. As this was a Betty Crocker product it's possible these advantages were only because of the Condesce and her ulterior motives, but it's also possible that in any post-scratch universe, the inhabitants are presented with "handicaps," to help them out the second time around.
