The history of the gay movement in Canada is similar to the American one: raids by the police against gay establishments increasingly brought people together to fight back and demand their rights. Here's a video of a young Margaret Atwood in 1981 speaking to a largely gay audience (I think). She's got great sense of timing and humour, doesn't she?
